How Much Did Tommy Bowden's Firing Set Us Back?

Do you remember the first part of the 2008 football season? We had a verbal commitment from superstar safety Craig Loston from Louisiana. I believe DeVonte Hollomon had either verbaled or put Clemson atop his list of favorites. With Hollomon leaning towards the Tigers, Stephon Gilmore was favoring us as well.
Of course, Tommy Bowden was deservingly fired mid-season, causing the recruiting class to disintegrate before our eyes. Thus, the 2009 class only had a dozen recruits, while Hollomon and Gilmore joined South Carolina's 12th ranked 29-man class. Clemson's small class was equivalent to an NCAA-mandated reduction in scholarships. Notice how Miami and The Real USC went from the mountaintop to the valley after such penalties.
Perhaps the size of and defections from the 2009 class contributed to South Carolina's rise and dominance over Clemson during the following several years. Also, if Hollomon and Gilmore had committed to Clemson in 2009, Jadeveon Clowney might have become a Tiger as well because of the Rock Hill connection. Recall that Clowney took a couple weeks after signing day to commit to South Carolina because his visit(s) to Clemson had fared so well.
Without Hollomon, Gilmore, and Clowney, would South Carolina's domination of Clemson have ever occurred? Maybe. Maybe not. Remember that Coach Dabo had to learn on the job and correct his blunders like Billy Napier and Kevin Steele.
Oh well. The past is the past and Clemson appears to have recovered completely from the detrimental effects of 2008 to 2009.

he did a great job here, just making the point that recruiting is night and day better now. I remember feeling giddy if we landed more the 3 4 stars in a class.

of like a picture with some stars in it.. Now when you look at it, you see more stars than you would at a joint chiefs of staff meeting.

facility improvements really helped, TB used to say he was embarrassed to show the old locker rooms when he was hosting officials.
This staff said most of the guys we signed were #1 on their board. The new recruiting pitch is, "you are the guy we want", and it is working well.
