Hong Kong....”what if” game

May 28, 2020, 7:21 AM

Just thinking out loud. I’ll admit to not being as concerned with world events in 1997 to remember all the details, but with hindsight at our disposal, should Great Britain have conceded control of Hong Kong to China 23 years ago?

I’m not thinking about retaining them as a permanent colony so much as not relinquishing control until they had more concrete independent nation/state status. It would have certainly been a much more likely move then than today, with a much stronger UK and a much weaker China in 1997. It just seems like it was so obvious to predict what China would eventually do to Hong Kong, and it’s a pity that a prosperous example of freedom and capitalism in the Far East was just thrown to the lions.

Dynamics then. I probably spent 20 days in HK on biz travel and it was a very enjoyable and safe city.
Capitalism reigned as there were plenty hookers around ??

Hong Kong is lost to China. They're slowly assimilating

Them.

Now Taiwan is something possibly worth fighting over.
