To continue the Texas theme...

Back in August I posed the question about moving a long distance from your family. At the time it was just sort of a pipe dream, but it's taken a turn for the serious pretty quickly.
I've secured a teaching/Dept. Chair offer from a school in Fort Bend county Texas, southwest of Houston. My wife is also a teacher, and is close to securing one as well, we believe.
So long story short, we think in the next week we're going to have to make the decision to stick around South Carolina (I've got some possibilities in Charleston too, though at this point not as promising) or move 1100 miles away. We've got three kids who are in love with their grandparents. It'd be hard.
It'd also be $30,000 more per year gross family income than we currently make. No state income tax.
Tell me what to do. I'm going to need at least one person to call me a pu$$y for asking, one request for a picture of my wife, and one insult against teachers. Thanks.

then moved to where it's now a 7 hour drive. Not quite the same, but the quality grandparent time my kids had was cut from about once every 3 to 4 weeks to once every 3 months or so. Depending on the age of your kids, it may or may not be too difficult.
When we made the move, our oldest was almost 6 1/2. She did not approve. Leaving Grandma and Grandpa, leaving all those kindergarten friends. Many times over the first four or five months she threatened to move back to where we came from.
For our then 3 year old. No big whoop.
Best advice I got was from someone who had a similar moving experience then again when his kids were older (i.e. teenagers and much more lippy). At that young of an age, they get over it pretty quick. They make new friends easily and move on with life. Teenagers, on the other hand, and as we all probably remember, are malicious, cruel and insensitive ######## and #######. Moving at that age can be a lot more difficult.
The relationship with the grandparents will survive if you work at it. Skype, phone calls, visits as often as is affordable (although I admit that a 7 hour drive is a lot easier than a 15 hour drive and a hell of a lot cheaper than 2 or 4 plane tickets).
Do what you feel is best for you and your family. The rest works itself out.

That was the call for me to move back. And I did as soon as I could manage. Same thing has happened to some of my friends.
Your relationship with your parents/siblings, age and general health of them certainly need to be considered. It's rough when somebody has to go to the hospital or have surgery/treatments and you are helplessly sitting 1000 miles away. That's an awful feeling that $30,000 in the bank doesn't cure.

I won't sugarcoat it; it's the toughest thing by far about being on Maui.
That said, make sure to budget in a couple of flights per year back home. If you can get your parents to do the same, it will be much less difficult. Go ahead and plan them as soon as you can, because there's something comforting about having that specific date home already laid out.
Anyway, that's the best I can do for you.
Btw, how 'bout a photo of your wife and female cousins? Teachers are da bomb. Both my parents were teachers, so I gots nothing bad to say.

Probably the biggest thing most people don't think about
May 15, 2015, 2:27 PM

when making a move like this is a source of weed. I understand you'll be closer to Mexico, but that isn't going to translate into easy access to high grade marijuana. You're going to have to find a new dealer, and as we all know, that's always a royal pain in the ###. You'll have to factor in paying $5-$20 over market value, depending on quantity, for a year or so until you prove to be a reliable customer, and that sketchy period when neither of you trust each other can be rough.
It's hard going from an established pipeline to not knowing where your next 1/8th is going to come from, but if you are determined to make this move, it's going to be something you have to overcome. You'll be in my prayers.

I'm actaully on your side with pot should just be legal. I do however find it laughable that people say it isn't addicting. Will going off it knock your #### it dirt like heroin or something? No. I liken it to people who are addicted to sugar.

If you weren't going to be tough enough to actually make this move, why did you waste anybody's time talking about it? #### all else, make the move, then deal with the other bumps as they come.
