Facemask equipment question
Nov 30, 2018, 7:09 AM
|

All linemen used to wear those bigger facemasks that would go below the chin pretty much for the last 25 years or so. Not 1 single lineman wears them now. They all have the short facemasks like RBs & CBs now. Did all the helmet companies quit making them for some kind of liability reason? Thanks

They certainly still make them. It’s really a player / coaching staff call, I believe. I mean I remember leg pads actually providing cushioning too... nowadays leg pads are as thick as shoe insoles and half the quarterbacks don’t wear their mouthpiece so they can be heard better (talking to you Deshaun!).

Go back and watch the Houston game from Monday night. I know what the rules say but you’ll be hard-pressed to find deshaun’s mouthpiece the entire game. He even got up after a hit and checked his lower lip after taking a hit because he thought it was bleeding. Not smart.

Yessir. Sadly, I haven’t seen DW wearing one at the next level in quite some time. Maybe never? I know he was mic’d up on MNF but this isn’t a good look; not in college & certainly not in the NFL.

Like the ones advertised on here but I’d rather keep mine. You don’t want to look like the old Terry Bradshaw pics missing a couple keys on the piano

Anyjuan remember TL’s first play this year?

He had his mouthpiece stuck in the hole in his helmet. I looked at my buddy and said “he’s so nervous he forgot to put his mouthpiece in!” Sure enough, after the play the ref walked over to him and reminded him he had to wear it.

My son plays FB and says the facemask is up to the player for the most part but also it depends on the type of shoulder pads. For example, he's a center so he wears the smaller version because his shoulder pads sit higher on his chest and the facemask has to clear them when he looks back at the QB.
As for the mouthpiece, can't speak for C1N or DW4 but more of those guys wear them then you realize. My wife works for an oral & maxillofacial surgeon and they're are companies that make personal fit mouthpieces that are very thin. They use a mold simliar to what orthodontists use. They're just a little thicker than the invisalign pieces. Some are even made to where they only cover the bottom of the front teeth.

As far as a mouthpiece....almost all concussions originate in the jaw. So the mouthpiece not only keeps you from looking like a toothless coot, it also keeps your brain from functioning like one.
