Question for Jounge car nerds...

Jun 27, 2018, 11:48 PM

what would cause a 18 year old 4runner to sometimes engine shake vigorously on start up at idle, and sometimes not? A belt, or is tranny about to go bye bye?

My first move would be to check the spark plugs.

If an engine is burning oil sometimes when the engine is cold a plug won't fire. If it happens to be a fouled plug the engine will probably start idling rough all the time. Soon it won't smooth out until you reach a high RPM. Open a book and learn to read spark plugs. Different shade of white to black tell you about the cylinder's combustion activity.

Maybe cold start valve, maybe idle valve maybe a sensor lead of wire on either of those components. Wires move around during their heating and cooling cycles. Maybe oil and dirt creating a condition which doesn't allow a contact on a wire on one of those components. If you know where these components are and which sensors control them you can check all that out.

Your problem sound simple to fix but perhaps sometimes difficult to find.

I know what would cause me to vigorously shake when I was 18 years old.

Probably has nothing to do with your car, but it wouldn't hurt to check it's internet search history to be sure.
