No FG was the right call...

Sep 4, 2016, 12:51 AM

Gallman screwed up the play before when he ran out of bounds. Had he gone down before, we could have run the clock down to 5 seconds or less...they would have gotten one play instead of having 40 seconds.

No it wasn't after he ran out of bounds , you then for sure kick it.

You don't risk the block and run back IMO.

I understand the risk of a block and return, but your team only has to execute on one play without a major meltdown to possibly put the game away if you kick the field goal.

By giving them the ball with 45 seconds left, you put your team in a position where they have to execute properly for several plays without a major meltdown.

That doesn't take into account the chances of converting the 4th down, but once Gallman ran out of bounds, there was just too much time and too far to go to convert the first down to risk going for it, IMO.

So you risk a hand off/fumble scoop and score instead? Did they block any previous kicks in the game?

Not sure where all this fear is coming from. It's a short kick...less likely to get blocked by putting more air under it.

While i took the spread and would have called for a fg myself, strange things happen in Jordan Hare. After the start of the 2nd quarter i knew it would be like the Louisville game. Glad we pulled it out

Yep, very happy with a win though. I think we're gonna have some growing pains with our DBs. Especially when we play a QB that can throw the ball.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

that makes sense.....in my book another glorius victory.....

Sep 4, 2016, 12:53 AM

..D looks as good as last year and O will find it's groove...

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Maybe so, but there were 40 seconds left, so kick the FG!***

It was a bad angle and Huegle had already missed a PAT

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

He has been great in the clutch - super last year - kick

Sep 4, 2016, 1:03 AM

the field goal!

Is Dabo that inflexible that he couldn't change the call after Gallman ran OOB? If that's the case, I'm worried about our coaching staff for the rest of the season.

Re: No FG was the right call...

Sep 4, 2016, 12:56 AM

After he ran out of bounds then maybe you kick it...I may agree with that...but I am MUCH more pissed at Gallman for not having more situational awareness.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Thats b/c you'd rather be mad at Wayne than Dabo

Sep 4, 2016, 12:59 AM

He was trying for the game ending first down. Shoulda stayed in bounds but afterwards a short FG would have ended it, up nine. Game over. Yiu coach from where you are, not where you hoped to be.

If he would have stayed inbounds yes .
But Gallman was a workhorse with 30 + carries

Gallman was fighting for yards he took a hit to force him out of bounds. Still should of kicked the FG

Player mistakes in time management are going to happen. Coaching mistakes of that magnitude are hard to overlook. I am very disappointed in the coaching staff for running on 4th down in that situation. Happy for the win and proud of how the team played, but I can't help the nagging feeling that someone important was betting against the spread...

Re: No FG was the right call...

Sep 4, 2016, 12:55 AM

Worst call of the game--year--all time !!!!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Uhh you kind of have to change your decision based on that play.

Sep 4, 2016, 12:57 AM

Going on 4th was the correct call if Gallman stays in bounds. Once he goes out you kick the FG. Kicking the fg is at least 80% game over, and maybe 20% giving them the ball back not far from where we did anyway. Oh and like .0001% it gets blocked and run back.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

100% agree. Very odd decision.***

Always take the points. Defense definitely deserves the game ball. A lot of dropped balls by the wideouts. Easily fixable.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Who says we get points, we could not even make an extra

Sep 4, 2016, 1:16 AM

point from the 3 yard line. Special teams again are a concern.

I think the only reason there is debate about going for the FG is we don't trust our special teams. We trust the D more, but generally, yes I think FG is right answer.

No, it's not.***

Alright, you talked me into it...the Dabo decision after Wayne didn't run out should have been to kick the FG...be interesting to see if he owns up to it.
