Is Stoudt actually playing well?
Sep 9, 2014, 9:25 AM

One of the common phrases I keep hearing is that Stoudt is playing well, but I'm not convinced that is the case.
We're averaging 2.2 points per drive with him in the game, his passing efficiency rating is 127.9 (good for 62nd in the country), his QBR is 38.2 (average QBR is 50), he has as many TDs as INTs (just a 1 to 1 ratio), and he's averaging 4 rushing yards a game.
From an efficiency standpoint, it's hard to argue that the offense is actually running well with Stoudt right now, especially when you consider one of the games was against SC State. Stoudt needs to complete and attempt more down-field passes, or this offense won't be successful with him in the game.
So far, 48%, or 29 out of Stoudt's 60 passing attempts, have been behind the line of scrimmage. He's 27/29 on those passes (93.1%). On the 31 passing attempts where the ball went beyond the line of scrimmage, he's completed just 11 of them (35.5%).
Both the completion percentage and the number of completions (5.5 per game) is very worrying to me, and should be to anyone hoping we beat FSU.

I'm pretty sure any original doubts about hiring Dabo in 2009 have zero to do with the quarterback controversy of 2014.

Dabo has done is somehow a bad thing. There are losers still mad they were completely wrong, and pheebo is one of them. Thought that was obvious, but it wasn't any trouble explaining. Pheebo hasn't really been right about anything, ever. Just FYI.

I read it as him saying there are people saying Dabo can do no wrong...which is true too. There are people out there who still don't want Dabo (I'm not one of them), but there are more people on this board who take a disagreement with Dabo as a personal insult to Dabo and the Clemson football program.

nothing wrong? There is no such thing in a football head coach or other. I think you may be a little confused on that one.
And plus, you must not be familiar with this character "pheebo". His "the dabos" comment was undoubtedly a disgruntled jab at those who were right while he was dead wrong. After 5 years he's still desperately searching for ways to demean Dabo, yet claims to be a Tiger fan. Sad, if true.
I'm not sure I've seen anyone take offense to valid criticism of the staff, but guys who say Dabo/Brent/Chad don't know what their doing are just plain ignorant. They deserve to be called idiots. And hindsight coaching is always funny too.
Hope its all clear now.

The coaches said he played well on Saturday but what I saw was a lot of over thrown passes. SC State could have had 3 picks against Stoudt, so if he plays like that against Florida St then I honestly don't see us having a game in Tallahassee.

Clemson went 3-6-2 and 0-4-1 in conference.
Who was his backup riding the pine? Steve Fuller.

Guys do get injured but QB is not a very injury high position.
This is obviously a rebuilding year for us. Cole is done after this year, he isn't going to the NFL. Its not like we are grooming him for the pros or giving him preference is really going to pay off. How about we let Watson start in this rebuilding year, get the experience he needs. That way when the freshman rise up next year when we should have a knockout offense again, Watson wont have to warm up he'll be so far ahead of the game.
Holding back your best player doesn't help us. Its not like Stoudt is going to the NFL...

He would have had the same risk of getting injured that year compared to the years he played.
The dumbest argument is to not play a player so he doesn't get hurt, in football of all games.
Not to mention DW has been here since January in a college weight room, and nutrition program.

I'm amazed that you're so invested in this topic. You seem to think that your logic matters in the debate. Dabo is the Head Coach of the Clemson University Football Team. He is paid well over $2 million per year for his services, which implies that the University has a great deal of confidence in his leadership. He has said unequivocally that Cole Stoudt is the starting quarterback. It is a settled issue "until" in practice and on field performances convince him otherwise. That being the case, why not let it go? Dabo wasn't hired to make the fans happy. He was hired to run the football program with integrity and produce winning teams for the long haul. He's doing the best he knows how to do just that. What difference does it make whether you can build a statistical case against his decision? He simply does not care what you think. So let's move on to something more productive? Go Tigers! Beat the Seminoles!!

What productive topics do you suggest?

Its football season and there is a clear controversy at QB. Dabo faned the flames by suggesting that Stoudt will lead us to the promised land. Anyone thats watched 5 min of game film on each QB will tell you Watson is head and shoulders above Stoudt.
Just bc he makes $2M it doesnt mean he makes all the right calls. He's in a tough spot as a coach right now, but its clear that Watson is much better than Stoudt.
Stoudt can be a consistent winner, but Watson can get you a title. From the way he handled being thrown into the fire at UGA, I have no worries on how Watson would do in Tally. That kid was built for this.

IPTAY donations, ticket purchases, and fan's TV subscriptions.
If IPTAY can come to a fan begging them for money every year, then that fan is sure as hell entitled to share their opinion, especially when that opinion is supported with indisputable facts.

but saying I shouldn't question the coach because he's the coach is like saying I shouldn't question the president because he's the president.
I guarantee you most of the people who question Obama know way less about foreign or monetary policy than the people who question coaching decisions know about football.

Penthouse Tiger, you miss my point. I'm not implying that you, a supporter and even perhaps contributor to IPTAY, don't have a right to express your feelings about Dabo, Clemson University and any other Clemson related topic you desire. My point is, the sentiment being expressed by you and so many others on the board the past few days has been heard by both Dabo and the University Trustees. Their response is crystal clear; "They don't care what you think." Fact is, they pay $2 million + per year for Dabo's opinion and nothing for yours and mine. That being the case, isn't it time to let it go. Rest assured Dabo isn't sitting up nights losing sleep because TN posters disagree with him. He's doing what he thinks is the right thing to do and that isn't going to change. That's why I suggest using your time more productively. But that's your decision. I just want you to be aware of the impact you are having so you can make an intelligent choice as to how to proceed. Go Tigers, beat the Seminoles!

or a chance to beat FSU with Stoudt as the starter. That has statistically proven itself.
It was painfully obvious when Stoudt was too scared to throw 5 yards down field against SC STATE. And when he did, he completed an overwhelmingly small percentage of them.

you're a bad fan for stating facts. They're worried too even if they won't admit it. I haven't understood all of this cole stoudt is playing great and has earned the job talk. He's literally earned the job by just being here for the longest and sitting behind tajh.

Is one real game (against a quality opponent) even an accurate scale measure??
Deshaun Watson is a super talent!!
But everyone here bashing Cole seems to think he will singlehandedly become Jameis Winston and Johnny Manziel overnight because of an impressive drive or two against GA and a "steller performance" against an FBS school.
My question here is, and this is certainly not knocking DW at all....is WHEN is everyone going to start trusting our coaching staff????
Cole as the starter "lost" ONE game! There is no GUARENTEE at all that we would have beaten UGA had DW been playing the whole game.
Trust the coaches! And let this thing play out the way it's been drawn up in the war room!
Go Tigers!!!

My whole thing is putting deshaun out there when stoudt a struggled for a few drives then once he's scored we take him out, it seems the coaches know he's better too but won't leave him out there, if he scores then let him have consecutive drives, he should have been perfect against sc state but a receiver dropped the ball and cole stoudt almost threw 2 picks and threw a lot of balls too high. If stoudt could just move the offense and get the ball out of his hand and downfield to the open receivers I wouldn't have any problem with keeping deshaun on the sidelines but he's not doing that I don't see how people can argue that he's been as productive, he has 1 touchdown. But who knows maybe he lets loose and slings it at Florida state, all I know is right now he hasn't played well and people would be flipping ##### if it were tajh doing this.

Here's a comparison of the two:
Stoudt Behind Line of Scrimmage: 27/29 (93.1% comp, 48% of total attempts, 71.1% of all completions) 0-10 yards: 6/14 (42.8% completion, 23.3% of total attempts, 15.7% of completions) 11-20 yards: 1/3 (33.3% completion, 5% of total attempts, 2.6% of completions), 1 INT 21+: 3/12 (25% completion, 20% of total attempts, 7.9% of completions), 1 TD
Watson Behind Line of Scrimmage: 3/3 (100% comp, 23.1% of attempts, 30% of completions) 0-10 yards: 2/2 (100% comp, 15.4% of attempts, 20% of completions), 2 TDs 11-20 yards: 1/3 (33% comp, 23.1% of attempts, 10% of completions) 21+: 4/5 (80% comp, 38.5% of attempts, 40% of completions), 2 TDs

Here's some more...despite the amt of snaps & series being lopsided, here's what the overall stats look like for throws going further than 10 yards downfield.
Stoudt: 5/17 (29.4% completion) 148 yards (8.7 yards per attempt), 1 TD 1 INT
Watson: 5/8 (62.5% completion) 169 yards (21.1 ypa), 2 TD 0 INT
Again, this isn't meant to rag on Cole, because I do think he's a capable quarterback. However throwing downfield is critical to the success of this offense. Watson has shown during his limited snaps that this is a strength of his. Cole, with small sample size as well, as shown this isn't necessarily a strength of his.

Yes he's playing well. Does it compare to last year? Not really. Last years offense was special. This year the coaches are trying to keep it more balanced. But that's not to say the offense is not doing good with Cole. Of course there is room to grow like every team.

I think Watson is gonna be great, but when in the fire of UGA in the 4th quarter he didn't do any better than Stoudt. UGA had also been able to see some film of Stoudt in a college football game, something they couldn't view of Watson because he had never played a down of college football. We played four quarterbacks against SC ST and they didn't stop any of them. We have seen two games, our coaches have seen every practice, I'd say they know more about this team than we do.

All 4 of Watson's drives against SC State ended in a TD.
Only 3 of Stoudt's 8 drives against SC State ended in a TD...so SC State did stop Stoudt 5 times.

I would agree with that. But it doesn't change the fact that he looked much worse in a play to play comparison. Even throwing the ball on 3rd and 4th and 5 before turning it over on downs.

Stoudt's yards per attempt is 7.4, which isn't bad, but not great either (Boyd was 9.3, 9.1, 7.7). However, one completion was essentially a handoff to Scott that went for 69 yards. If you remove that one, his YPA drops to 6.4.
For comparison, if you remove Watson's longest completion, (which was actually thrown down the field) his YPA is still 14.5.
I think Stoudt is a good QB, but he has not been as good as I expected. It's a small sample size and I think he can play better, but I've also seen enough to know that Watson is clearly better.
