I'm not sure I see a scenario where we would be playing in Pasadena. I think many on this board don't understand the national prestige of a Rose Bowl visit. Only 20 non-PAC12 / Big10 teams have played in the Rose Bowl in over 100 years of its history. Only 5 such teams have played in the Rose Bowl since 1946 (Miami - 2002, Oklahoma - 2003, Texas - 2006, TCU - 2011, and FSU - 2015). They don't call it the "Grandaddy of Them All" for no reason. Clemson would permenantly attach its name to college football royalty/prestige. And lets not forget the Rose is the only major bowl Clemson has never made it to.

Fiesta Bowl - 2016
Sugar Bowl - 1958
Orange Bowl - 1951, 1957, 1982, 2012, 2014, 2015
Peach Bowl - 1979, 1993, 1996, 1998, 1999, 2004, 2007, 2012
Rose Bowl - ???

1 plays 4 at the closest venue to 1's location/campus.
2 plays 3 at the other venue.

who we play as opposed to where we play. That said, i'd rather be a 2 or 3 seed if it means we get to play wisconsin or ohio state.

but we still need to add a Sugar Bowl trophy to our collection as well. We will have another shot at the Rose Bowl next time it rolls around in 2021.

The bowl is not necessarily the closest one. The committee does not want the 1 seed to be at a geographic disadvantage. If we play an SEC team then I think that it would likely be the Rose Bowl.
