HR experts (and general trouble-makers like myself)

I have a "friend", let's call her "sarahadidas"...
She works for a large corporation in the medical field.
She normally works 3 12 hour shifts a week.
Ever since this Covid-19 thing came around, her hours have been cut anywhere from 5-20 hours per week.
Her employer has encouraged her and her coworkers to use their paid-time-off to make up for the lost hours.
She and her coworkers are now out of PTO and are still having their hours cut.
"Sarahadidas" emailed her boss and mentioned applying for partial unemployment.
Her did not reply to the email, but rather called her and told her, more or less, that she would be causing trouble by applying for unemployment and encouraged her not to apply. Boss also said to "give them a few weeks to figure out how to handle this" and tried to sweep it under the rug.
*****
To me, a non HR type, this sounds like her company is teetering on the edge of laying off too many people to apply for some sort of loan forgiveness and is relying on a female workforce that tends to go-with-the-flow to voluntarily go home and take a pay cut.
Am I being a negative nancy, or am I on to something?
I encouraged "Sarahadidas" to reply, via email, to her boss, cc their HR department and recap the phone conversation, asking for clarification something like... Dear Boss and HR, My understanding from our phone conversation today is that I have three options: 1. use my vacation to substitute 2. File for unemployment 3. work my full schedule of 36hrs per week. Are my hours going to be maintained, because I no longer want to use my vacation time. Regards, "Sarahadidas"
I also encouraged her to apply for the unemployment, truthfully, and see what happens.
Any serious advice?
If not, how about some stupid jokes?

I don't know. SC got that we can fire you at any time thing going on without reason but it legit sounds crappy. Have you consulted outside legal council?

I have no idea what a Thomas is.
and the boss is a woman.
I would think that even in SC, Sarahadidas may have a case that she was fired in retaliation for filing for partial unemployment, which is a big no-no, even in our state.
Does asking the lounge count as legal council? If so, then yes.

I sorta had the same thing happen to me.....Hey, why don't you take some vacation time so upper mgmt doesn't put you on leave of absence.
Ok, sure, phone call on day 1 of vacation, "McLovin, I'm sorry to tell you this, but you're being laid off".
WELL #### I coulda got one more day out of em if they didn't tell me to use time off with pay.

Someone who was tending bar can make more money being on unemployment?
Remember....UE is untaxed income. They'll want their taxes next year.

Not sure those going on UE know they'll have to pay the taxes on that income at tax time next year though.

I would advise her to ditch the fish net stockings. Then, maybe appeal to the boss about all the "stuff" she could do for him/her. ... Also, the letter clarifying the conversation...and maybe hinting about all the "stuff" she has already done for him/her, just to let them know she is serious. There probably is something going on with their business loan/grant request. They are maybe trying to play both sides of the fence. Not going to be a unique situation. Sooner or later some auditing will catch up to all that.

Her "costume" at work is much more traditional.
If by "stuff", you mean being sent home and asked to take PTO, then I agree. I hope she hasn't done any other "stuff". But as long as the checks keep rolling in, I guess I don't care.

I support ya'll's preference for fish net at home. Do you have difficulty finding your size and color? Keep that tractor revving!
There's going to be a lot of give and take in the workplace going forward. I'm afraid the repercussions of all this will be long lasting. Think long term with your decisions but exercise your rights. I'm sure her profession will be in demand with many opportunities. Sounds like they are asking for an employee financed furlough. Definitely get something in writing.

Record it. Then take that to every media outlet willing to listen. Sure, she gets fired and you guys eat dry dog food for a year or two...but when the book comes out and the movie rights are sold, THEN you're eating lobster tails made of gold on a yacht made of silk.
It's called 'sacrifice'.

ryanadidas good luck at filing for unemployment. Probably be easier to get a pig of big foot right now. My wife applied like 3 weeks ago and still hasn't gotten a call back (that wasn't an after hours robo-response that essentially said see our website).

Officially 3,900 affected either by furlough or reduced hours. Although I firmly believe the number is much higher as the snakes always pad the stats.

Nearly all of the RN's that I am aware of have had reduced hours. I firmly believe that they are relying on the fact that most are women and tend to not question authority, or whatever, and have duped them into funding their own personal fruloughs through paid time off.
