I like travelocity for car rentals. They'll show you rates

from a buncha rental agencies at once. No deposit required to hold the rental. Even when I looked into discounted rental car rates through insurance, credit cards etc those 'discounts' come off of the full rate, so just cheaper usually to skip those.
Also, if you can wait til last minute you might get something SUPER cheap - or end up SOL.

Fill it up before returning it. On insurance...

Confirm that your auto insurance covers you for rentals, then decline the extra coverages offered when you pick up the car.
They'll offer to fill up with gas for you, if you're willing to pay a huge premium for it. Fill up on the way back to drop it off, and keep the receipt.

use a discount site like orbitz, expedia, etc. for the best deals. If you are only concerned with getting from point A to B, try to get into a bottom line economy car. Do be careful with the discount sites though as more often than not you are required to prepay and have no option for a refund if you need to cancel.

a toll booth. They'll charge you like $15 when the toll was only $1.50. Thrifty also only has like 1 pickup van for every 5 Enterprise vans in my experience.

Many states are implementing boothless tolls.
May 15, 2015, 11:34 AM
|
|
You drive on a toll road, you have 7 days to go online and pay it. You fail to do that, they send you a letter, and you pay the toll and a late fee. If they send that letter to a rental agency, that company will supply the state with your name and address for the state to bill you directly. That company will then charge your credit card $30 to cover their inconvenience (does not include toll)

whether its tolls, insurance, gas, gimmicks, tricks, membership cards/discounts, et al. that is pulled by the crazy rental car business.
Silvercar has none of that - you know what you're getting and paying for upfront....and its an Audi to boot. The biggest issue is they are only in a few markets like LAX and south Florida.

pro tip - rental drivers often leave keys in car at airport
May 15, 2015, 2:57 PM
|
|
just hang around the rental return area and wait for a stooge to be in a hurry to make his flight. Sometimes they don't even bother to shut the door - they expect the help to tend to it. A middle aged white overweight guy in a rumpled business suit is your best candidate. As he trundles off towards the terminal building, jump in the car he just left behind and go. Freebie! Everything will be billed to his card after he gets back home to Minneapolis.
Dump it off within 1/4 mile of airport when you are done.
