I am not the oldest Tiger, so be gentle with me- graduated in 1993...... here is my list. Thoughts? Your list?
1. Steve Fuller 2. Tajh Boyd 3. Woodrow Dantzler 4. Homer Jordan 5. Charlie Whitehurst
sorry, but Watson might end up being the greatest but he needs to play a whole healthy season or 2 IMHO....

He's not one of the top five QBs to ever play at Clemson. Poor arm and surrounded by talent. He could run the option and he was a gamer but as far as quarterback skills; not even close.

Except for the fact

that was the type of skills we wanted our QB to have. He was running a triple option offense, not run and shoot. The skill he needed the most was making his reads and making an accurate pitch at the perfect time. If he could complete a pass further than 10 yards down the field then it was a bonus. Rodney ran our offense like he was conducting an orchestra thus he did his job as a QB.

Rodney was probably a perfect QB for Coach Ford's offense. I don't believe he was asked to do a whole lot of throwing, but you're right as far as numbers go, Rodney or Homer were never at the top. I do respect the fact that they were both winners, and that will always make them favorites to me. If we're talking numbers alone then, Tajh, Woody, Charlie, Fuller, and maybe Nealon Greene.

Just check the wins!!!!! That's all that matters and Rodney threw the ball pretty darn well in the bowl games. Oh these boys now play a lot more games than Rodney did.

Homer didn't have anywhere near the numbers Tajh had, that's for sure, but I'll always remember the games he played against USC in '80 and the Orange Bowl. Those two games alone make him one of my favorites.

I've got some DVDs of The Tiger during the championship year, and one thing that impressed me most about Homer, was the clutch third down plays he made. Some with his running some with his passing.

Nobody can say who's the best,it's all opinion. We can only have our favorites from those special games. Mine are: 1. Homer Jordan 2. Jimmy Addison 3. Charlie Whitehurst 4. T. Boyd 5. Rodney Williams Each one had special moments especially Homer Jordan in that magical year. Hopefully we can add D. Watson to this list.

It is impossible to compare players across generations.
Look at our starting offensive line in our 81 national championship. 230 217 218 241 246

Currently on campus. A once in a lifetime player, without a doubt. To perform the way he did in Georgia & talahassee, that's freakish. So number one is locked up imo. 2-5: boyd, dantzler, fuller & Whitehurst. Enough of this banks McFadden stuff, guys.... No leather helmet players allowed lol

Banks McFadden was an AP All-American. Any of your 5 make it?

1. Fuller 2. Whitehurst 3. Woodrow 4. Boyd 5. Jordan
Boyd and Jordan were both surrounded by ridiculous talent. Fuller and Charlie only 2 who could sustain in the League. Woodrow did something no other player in CFB had done (2000,1000) at that point. Hobestly, when talking Clemson QB, 5 is too many to list. It's a stretch to call a couple of them good.

first of all the list has to start with Steve Fuller, who...
Feb 19, 2015, 11:57 PM
|
|
1) Led Clemson to an 11-1 record and #6 ranking in the 1978 final AP poll.
2) Was the only player in CU history to be a two time ACC Player Of The Year.
3) Was a two time First Team Academic All American.
4) Was a 1978 AP All American QB.
5) Was 6th in the Heisman Trophy voting in 1978.
6) Was a 1st round NFL draft pick.
7) Played 7 years in the NFL and had 5 starts for the 1985 Chicago Bears that won the Super Bowl.
You take any player from any generation, I don't care who it is, and go down that list. Whoever you have in mind, be it McFadden, Jordan, Whitehurst, Boyd, whoever ... and ask yourself if they achieved that.
No matter who your "favorite" is, it's a safe bet your answers are No, No, No, No, No, No & No. In fact, only Homer Jordan has achieved even one of those criteria, all of the rest completely strike out and are OH-FOR-SEVEN.
Sorry, but it's not even close.

Oof...Whitehurst over Boyd? I'm assuming that's only due to their records against South Carolina...right? Other than that, Boyd was much better than Whitehurst.

No.the fact that Charlie wasn't surrounded by all pro wr and has actually stuck in the league. Whitehurst would have thrown for 40000 yards in morris system in 4 years with those weapons. People don't realize how good he was. Other than fuller, best we have had. Just ask nfl gms....or they just are all wrong about Boyd?

Yea, that's a very good point about the WRs. We didn't really have much when Charlie was here, and the WRs--and system--with Tajh were both stellar. I guess I'm basing my ranking on success and not potential.
I don't think the NFL scouts are wrong about Tajh--I just think he was a great college QB.
