Do the Braves have a shot at the playoffs this year?

Jul 3, 2017, 11:00 AM

They sit at 40-41 and 7.5 games out of first.
I haven't watched much this year and don't really know much about them.
I know Freeman was tearing it up before he got hurt.
Do they have the pitching to keep this run up ?
I keep hearing about all the young studs they have on the farm.
It would be great if they become a contender once again.

It'll take an excellent 2nd half without having those 5-6 game losing streaks they tend to have a lot. They are playing great ball right now and have won the last 6 series I believe. The NL West has both WC spots right now and the 2nd WC team is just a game worse than the NATS, shows how strong that div is. Idk if the Braves have the bullpen to pull it of, they give up the lead a lot....somehow they've been able to pull out a lot of close 1 run games here lately. But who knows, anything can happen. The lineup looks really good and Freeman will be back soon.

They have a shot at the playoffs IF

they get a rifle with a long-range scope

Seriously, Braves starting pitching has been just short of abysmal (despite the near no-hitter last week) and they are Kings of hitting into crucial double plays

Pitching is suspect at best. However, I think that the Braves are building a VERY strong minor league system of players. If Dansby Swanson can stay healthy and if they can secure his contract moving forward, they have a strong foundation to build on.
Go Braves!

probably not this season

we are in good shape to maybe contend for wildcard but we need better pitching.

We took a step forward getting rid of Colon, but we need Tehran to pitch better (yesterday he had a good day until the 7th). Folty is our best pitcher far and away and I'm glad he is young. We need some our AAA and AA pitchers to progress. The reason we are in the shape we are with pitching is bc many of them aren't progressing like they should.

I like our bats though and getting Freeman back should make us even better. We made a great move to get Adams when Freeman went down and now we are looking to keep them both in the lineup by moving Freeman to 3rd Base.

The Braves have their pitching problems but the Nationals bullpen is a horror story. If it were half good, they could be 15 to 30 games ahead.

I feel like they are going to see what happens over the next few weeks and if they keep winning.
Wouldn't they make some moves and try to get a few quality pictures?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

No! Quality pitchers are in AA & AAA now- like Lucas Sims-

Clemson commit who was drafted by the Braves 1st round 2012. Per Braves management, they're bringing them along slowly so as not to
rush and ruin them long range.

They are starting to get it going. Some guys that were struggling are finally heating up. They found a gem in Matt Adams by mistake when Freeman got hurt. The plan is to play Freddie at 3rd when he comes back.

They have also called up Sean Newcomb who has pitched well and actually replaced Bartolo Colon in the rotation. It seems like the pitching is finally coming around. They could be a dangerous 2nd half team

They will find out what they are made of shortly as they have the nationals and the astros back to back coming up

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

their next several series are against good competition

Jul 3, 2017, 5:15 PM

So we will know very shortly. If they can make it through that stretch at .500 that would impress me.

I'm not thinking playoffs this year. If they can finish above .500 look out next year. The management is setting us up for 2 to 3 years down the road. They are fun to watch! !

I've followed them a good bit. As other people have said, starting pitching is not good enough yet. The good news is they have 3 great starting pitching prospects at AA. And Sean Newcomb was promoted and has been pitching well for them. I think they'll be back in the playoffs 2018 or 2019.

I hope so......

Don't see why not?.....

Just need to find someone that can consistently close out games, because Jim Johnson ain't worth a pot to $# it in .. .
