School administrators are stupid.

its just fingers guys.

like this?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

That is a dumb thing for people to get mad about.***

significance whatsoever.

Uptight sticks in the mud creates this kind of nonsense. If the kids attracted no attention for it, it would stop.

headlight alignment?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

exactly.

Dec 6, 2013, 4:36 PM [ in reply to Its just fingers, Dad. 90% of the world, it has no ]

If these things would just be ignored they'd stop on their own accord. If you know it's clearly for attention, why do you feed it that attention? Stupid media/parents/teachers.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Srs?

Dec 6, 2013, 4:38 PM [ in reply to Its just fingers, Dad. 90% of the world, it has no ]

You confuse me...

I can't see how this would be OK...if they did the gesture they know what it means. Please stick two fingers in my vag and one in my bhole...that isn't something I want my daughter putting out there. Maybe I am just a stick in the mud though.

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

No, see, they want to do that to the OTHER team.

Dec 6, 2013, 4:40 PM

On the court. Figuratively. Maybe literally, which would also be cool, but they probably mean figuratively. Their collective team wants to stick two fingers in the other collective team's vag, and another finger in the other collective team's bwhole.

after the game.

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

as a parent, that's fine. But suspending them?

Dec 6, 2013, 4:41 PM [ in reply to Srs? ]

unnecessary attention and exactly what will lead to others doing something similar.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I agree...it's a parent issue...not a school issue.***

So if in two years kids began flashing the peace sign

Dec 6, 2013, 4:42 PM [ in reply to Srs? ]

(or Churchill V for Victory sign) and said it was something sexual...then all the sudden we get our shorts in a knot about that?

In the US we can say "ok" with our hands...do that in some cultures and you'll get killed for it.

We put these values on things...there is nothing inherent in these at all.

With my kids, I take the gravity out of "curse" words and gestures like this. We as a culture say they are rude...but they have no inherent value...they are just letters to form words.

It completely robs these words of power in that case to a kid. My kids can put them in a broader context.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

There is a weird psychological effect with this stuff...

Dec 6, 2013, 4:50 PM

Saying curse words after you hurt yourself (like stubbing your toe on a table) has been shown to help relieve pain. It also has the tendency to get under people's skin more than other words that mean the same thing.

The whole idea of being offended is a weirdly specific human evolved emotion that makes little sense.

Re: So if in two years kids began flashing the peace sign

Dec 7, 2013, 1:19 PM [ in reply to So if in two years kids began flashing the peace sign ]

With about a quarter million words in the English language I would hope that we can teach the kids to express themselves in a manner which is acceptable in the society in which they live. Freedom of speech is wonderful but there are more rights than that one.
Don't force what you prefer on others.

The reason this country has a future.

THANK YOU FOR ALL YOU DO

It wouldn't bother me a bit if my daughters did that

Dec 6, 2013, 4:43 PM [ in reply to Srs? ]

because I would know that they are actually not inviting someone to stick anything anywhere and they are just trying to be funny. BTW my daughters are about the same age.

Maybe. I guess I just can't get as worked up about that

Dec 6, 2013, 4:35 PM [ in reply to Perhaps...but as a parent I would hope to raise my daughter ]

as I would at the trashy kids who'd flip the bird in the big school photos way back when.

Dec 6, 2013, 4:49 PM

me. I don't think they are, but I'm not sure. I used to be really uptight about it, but I remember being 16, and what I was doing then. I've told my kids it's best to wait, but don't be afraid to be you.
