Yeti experiment last night.

Sep 4, 2015, 9:30 AM

I added rock salt to my Yeti ice last night. After 20 minutes, my American Style Light Lager had nice little slush on the top. It was awesome. By the time the defensive game of the year was over, the beer was frozen solid. That was less than ideal. Fortunately, I didn't put all my beers in one Yeti. Conclusion: don't try to improve on the Yeti Miracle.

how much salt did you put? I would like to try this, but do

Not want frozen beer.

And I definitely don't drink it when it's 90 degrees outside. No idea how people do that.

Some.

Science is hard. Measuring is hard. Maybe I should try it again, but use less than some.

little more ice and a little more rock salt. Then after I get all the beer in, add a *little* water. Hard to measure...maybe a few handfuls? My tundra 45 isn't that big though so that's enough.

May give it a shot tonight

definitely worth a try

only downside is either the rock salt/salt water or the ocean saltwater has corroded my metal Yeti emblem.

The only things salt water won't mess up is saltwater, and fish.

Put the #### beer in the freezer for 10 minutes. You don't have to spend $500 on a cooler. Zero for ice, and nothing for salt.

Side question: Is non ethanol gas easy to get up there?

Sep 4, 2015, 10:14 AM

We have about 4 or 5 place in Mt Pleasant to buy it, which is nice. Some places its not so easy.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yeah, there are two places within 10 minutes or so

Sep 4, 2015, 10:15 AM

of me that have it. I think I paid $2.40 for it earlier this week.

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-15yr.jpgringofhonor-lakebum1-110.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

That's pretty awesome

Sep 4, 2015, 10:22 AM

I haven't bought any in a month or so, but last time I did I think it was $2.89. Lulz..my marina still gets $3.79/gallon for it. Convenience I guess.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I'm sure it's still in the $3 range at the marina

Sep 4, 2015, 10:24 AM

I'm still not sold it's even non-ethanol, particularly at Portman.

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-15yr.jpgringofhonor-lakebum1-110.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Up until early this year ours was still ethanol laced.

Sep 4, 2015, 10:26 AM

They say its changed. I bought some early this summer when I didn't feel like pulling the boat out of the water and trailer to go get it, but I've long since burned that out.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

All the Spinx stations around me see ethanol free

Phase separation (todays chemistry lesson)

Sep 4, 2015, 11:56 AM

Its funny, all the snake oil gas treatments like Startron, Stabil etc vaguely purport to stop that, but in reality, they can't.

They might be able to do something about the corrosion that will occur when you try to run the phase separated water through your engine (jury is out on that too), but they can't change the physical and chemical make up of ethanol laced gasoline.

Ethanol alcohol just doesn't bond to gasoline, and will eventually separate...especially after it has absorbed water from the atmosphere and gets heavier that the gas. Then what you have left is a gas like susbtance, and water. Neither burn very well.

The other bad part is that ethanol is a great cleaner..so if it is put in something that may have some older varnish from gas in it, it cleans that pretty well..so it flushes it into your fuel system and engine to burn. Fuel injectors don't like trash like that.

And then there is what ethanol does to butyl and other non viton rubber, plastics, and non flouro silicone. It makes it swell up and then dry out, and eventually it will break into nice little chunks that will also be flushed into your fuel system. Those don't burn very well either, nor does it react well with small orifices that fuel must flow through.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

It is interesting, with all the known problems

Sep 4, 2015, 12:00 PM

that come along with ethanol, why nobody is talking about taking it out of our gasoline, freeing up corn supply, and giving us more efficient fuel.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Sep 4, 2015, 12:16 PM

Use it quickly.

Sep 4, 2015, 12:19 PM

Don't fill your tank with it at the end of the season. Run as much as you can out, and then run some non ethanol through it before you winterize.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I use a tank about every two weeks, so it doesn't

Sep 4, 2015, 12:35 PM

sit too long. By mid October or so I usually start phasing out the ethanol gas and only putting non-ethanol in. We don't use the boat as much then, so I don't like to keep the tank full anyway.

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-15yr.jpgringofhonor-lakebum1-110.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Maybe I'm wrong

Sep 4, 2015, 1:11 PM

But I always filled my tanks over the winter to reduce air space and opportunity for condensation.

badge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I've done both.

Sep 4, 2015, 1:19 PM

With real gas, I don't think it matters. I never had a problem either way.

I wouldn't test it with ethanol. In a vented fuel tank, there will always be a fresh supply of air to absorb water.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Probably not a bad idea, I've just never done it

Sep 4, 2015, 1:22 PM [ in reply to Maybe I'm wrong ]

It'll only be sitting for 3 months though, I would think if you lived in a climate where you had to store it longer that might become an issue.
