Tevin Mack and 3 point shots

Tevin Mack is 63% inside the arc, while only shooting 27% beyond the arc. Why does Brownell keep scheming him to take so many 3’s? I’m not the most knowledgeable on basketball schemes. Maybe someone can enlighten me.

I see Mack averaging 44% overall. Only some elite big-men ever average above 60% and that basically has to be dunk-city. Without an outside shot or the risk, then opponents will go big stack the paint. You have to stretch the D or out-run them.
As for Mack, he is our barometer.
He was 70%+ against Duke and Syracuse. Under 40% against wake, uva, and Miami.

I saw 2p% at .672, I thought that meant all two point shot %. I see the 44% you are talking about under fg%. Like I said m not the most knowledgeable haha. Thanks for the input. Hopefully he goes of against ND

Because it’s much easier to get “open looks” beyond the arc

when the defense wants you to shoot it from there.
Then...it looks like smart coaching and you can blame it on the players for missing.
Then collect $2.5 Million.

I will let (force) a team shoot it as much as they want behind the arc if they aren't making it.

Yes. Beyond the arc is low probability that the ball will

go in the basket ...
Thus, your better off letting the guy take the shot and watch out for guys taking higher probability shots closer in ...
Now, some guys are GOOD at putting the ball in from far away ... like NBA players and a handful at the College level ..
Its a choice and strategy thing.

Brad isn’t scheming to get Mack to take so many threes.

In his post-game press conference after the Syracuse game, Brownell stated that he has been encouraging Mack to be more than just a three point shooter.
UVA’s defense makes teams shoot more threes.

I agree. That defense forces outside shots and you have to

use a guard to penetrate and create opportunities for guys like Simms inside. I think future games will be a better barometer for what Mack will do, but UVA was not a good game to criticize Mack for taking outside shots.

Because we have no inside game. Mack will have troubles inside with any team quality bigs. He only did well inside vs Cuse when their bigs fouled out.

That’s not true. Dolezaj fouled out with less than 8

minutes left. Sidibe fouled out with only 5 mins left. Mack only scored 5 points after their bigs fouled out.

I stand corrected. That said, he was getting a lot of mid range jumpers once they were in foul trouble even before them fouling out. He wasnt really able to bang in the paint throughout the game. I was wrong about the time frame though.

I don't agree with that either

All you have to do is look at the game logs. In the first 10 minutes of the 2nd half Mack had 10 points that were all generated from driving in the paint or battling for an offensive rebound and putting it back. In the last 10 minutes of the game he had 7 points generated from driving in the paint.
He had a couple of tough drives to the basket to score that got his confidence going according to his post game interviews. Once that happened and the bottom defenders started hesitating and it gave him the confidence and the time to hit the jumpers from the elbow and foul line.
