Curious for all the BBall experts and Brownell haters

If Coach Purcell was so good and clemson basketball is so good and rising and supported, and he was recruiting so well and stocked with talent, why did he leave in the middle of the night h for a lesser program and for a lesser conference?
It is easy to hate-rant on a clemson basketball and Brad Brownell, but what really does Clemson basketball have to offer a coach and recruits?
Finally, there are committed resources to basketball so whoever coaches next or continues to Coach, they will have more support. But Clemson basketball is a tradition-less and consistently average program.
Truth hurts.
Doesn't have to be that way and occasionally there have been moments throughout the program's years... but let's not kid ourselves and be like South Carolina and talk with an ego that has no sustained success behind it.
What are you willing to do to help Clemson basketball? Wish for baseball? Set expectations based of off Football support and tradition? Watch and wait?
I am not sure what I will do and I like Brownell.

Ollie left when he knew the jig was up...

the competition in the ACC was getting incredibly tough
with the inclusion of the Big East schools, and
he was having a hard time in the last couple of years
recruiting talent,
and recruiting talent that could stay in school.
DePaul was a good gig for him -
the fact that he was unable to make it work,
and in Chicago of all places,
should tell people what his next few years were going to be like if he stayed at Clemson.

The big selling point for Brownell was that with his style of play we could win in the tourney . He even said this himself Ha win in the tourney we can't even get in the NIT half the time . You should also know that I have defended Brad alot over the years. Still hoping he turns it around but it's hard to be optimistic .

Agree with 100%.
I just want Clemson to build a darn quality program. I do not know if. Lacy BB can do it or is the right personality type to do it.
I support him and defend him but know his time to do it is running short.

"I am not sure what I will do and I like Brownell. "
Well - I do NOT like Brownell, and BBall needs to be treated like a business instead of a mom-and-pop grocery store. That is, since CLEMSON fans just line up to support our team, and we all hope for the best outcome, it is still NOT up to the fans to make the important decisions to provide the best for these dedicated fans. IMO - the CLEMSON AD and anyone in charge of providing this product is insulting CLEMSON fans. In effect, they are telling us that "We don't care what you think, we are going to make money either way, so why bother?". So we keep watching , hoping, buying gear, buying tickets, buying over-priced refreshments, etc and the AD & Co. keep on counting their money. Change needs to start at the top. Maybe TRUMP needs to "Drain the swamp" in CLEMSON.

What? Clueless? How about explaining yourself beyond 140 characters. I am sure you have ability to form a thought or two and put them together for all us clueless folks to read.

coach's abilities--and inabilities--than a lot of people doesn't mean they hate the coach.
I've never found any reason to hate the man, or even dislike him. He's always been polite and mannerly every time I've talked to him.
But it doesn't take an Einstein to know (as he stated) "the definition of insanity is doing the same think over and over and expecting different results."

1. Einstein never really said that quote.
2. I posted the thread bc I am sick of the ranters who proclaim OPs greatness and Clemson's basketball history.
3. AD has an easy season to make based on record at the end of this year.
But I think this program is often held to unrealistic expectations by fans that have illinformed perceptions.
This year, FSU is far superior in bball to Clemson. Anyone who expected Clemson to win down there was Pollyanna and sh!tt!ng rainbows of foolish optimism.
This will be a curious end and off-season for Clemson basketball.
I wonder what it will really take to build a program in Clemson? and will Clemson be patient enough for one to be built?
We need a program builder but will Clemson fans support what it takes to actually build and sustain a basketball program.

crossroads. Purnell left because he hit a wall. Feeling that recruiting here was going to be tough, he opted for a style of basketball that did not require many good basketball players, but rather relied on mostly athletic types that weren't good enough to play for the big boys, and had them press like crazy all over the court, all game long, overplay and deny passing lanes, and either generate points off of turnovers, or work the clock and hold the ball until we had a really good shot. It worked great for a few years, but good teams eventually figured out how to beat our full court press, and it was over. Purnell did a great job for a while, but hit a wall and knew it was time to move on.
Our next coach MUST have one singular priority abo0ve all others: Recruit at a higher level than we traditionally have, thus taking the program up a notch.

Purnell's last three seasons were his best in the ACC....
He didn't invent the full court press. Not like his style of play was was new to anybody.
DePaul threw the money at him and with the off court issues it was obviously an easy decision for him to take off.
Had nothing to do with him "hitting the wall" or "his ceiling" or any of that. He had just brought in one of the best classes in Clemson history.

Clemson basketball won't recruit on name only

In order to improve in recruiting, we're going to have to find a coach who can get the potential out of the players who are already here. Brownell doesn't do that... he and his staff are incapable of that. His players don't show marked improvement. Nnoko regressed. Djitte... regressed.
We pay Brownell a competitive salary; a good enough salary to get better results than he gets. The problem isn't with his scheme; the problem is his ability to teach and motivate.
