ELIZABETHTON, Tenn. -- Dale Earnhardt Jr., his wife Amy and their child were on a plane that crashed in Tennessee on Thursday afternoon, according to Mike Davis, with JR Motorsports. Davis said the Earnhardts were not injured.

But I still remember when I heard about Dale Earnhardt’s death. I was working in New York and had taken a train to visit Uncle Bob in Massachusetts. He started saying something about how it was too bad what had happened to my guy. He assumed that as a Southerner I was a huge NASCAR fan. I hadn’t heard the news yet of course, but found myself dumbfounded and a little sad. Of course it wouldn’t touch the sadness that would come just 7 months later. I probably should quit drinking now, but I won’t.
