"The Congress shall have power...

Jan 3, 2020, 10:22 AM

...declare war, grant letters of marque and reprisal, and make rules concerning captures on land and water;...."

You are not the Congress, Mr. President, you don't have the power to attack a foreign military, or its generals, without a declaration of war from the Congress.

If Madam Speaker Pelosi impeached the president for taking this country to war without the Congress, I'd strongly endorse the effort.

congress gave that power away years ago***

Congress has given away every power except reelection

Jan 3, 2020, 11:09 AM

they give legislative powers to Administrative departments.

They give investigative powers to "blue ribbon panels and special prosecutors.

They dont do their budgetary jobs.

They keep and arms length from anything that may be a controversial decision.

They are there for one thing...re-election

^^^nailed it.

Jan 3, 2020, 11:35 AM

Enforcement of immigration laws, as passed by Congress, is now totally done at the discretion of the President. Obamacare was literally handed to the President to shape however the executive saw fit, with only the broadest of requirements. Drug laws are not enforced because Congress won't decriminalize pot, so states are doing that one by one. The list goes on and on.

And the reason is because every member of Congress cares only about reelection as Congress is a career to them. As such, they try and create as little controversy as possible, and are more than willing to punt their power to the President to have to avoid conflict. They can't even pass a yearly budget because we're so far in debt. They can't take away money they've already promised. They've never cut a penny that didn't at a minimum go elsewhere.

Our legislative branch is fully broken, and Presidents have been usurping powers for decades now from Congress.

congress also has the obligation to do immigration and pass

Jan 3, 2020, 10:30 AM

a budget, yet we have sanctuary cities and debt

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Well, at least pot is still illegal nationwide.***

Is the war on terrorism over already?

Jan 3, 2020, 10:34 AM

Did the terrorist get the message?

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpgringofhonor-clemsontiger1988-110.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

First, the Congress never declared

Jan 3, 2020, 12:56 PM

war on "terrorism" but merely "authorized" the use of force in some circumstances. Many Constitutional scholars would take issue with the Constitutionality of their actions.

But, for purposes of the present discussion, lets assume the Congress did appropriately exercise its war power and that this did somehow extend to actions against Afghanistan, Iraq, ISIS, Syria, etc....

That power most certainly did not extend to the Iranian military. If the Chairman of the US Joint Chiefs gets assassinated while visiting Brussels by the Iranian military, you better believe that's an act of war. Our Constitution does not allow the President to take us to war but it appears that is what has happened.

You're certainly not wrong.

Jan 3, 2020, 10:34 AM

It's an unfortunate precedent that was set years ago, and it needs to be checked.

They have the purse. They can refuse to fund a war.

Jan 3, 2020, 10:38 AM

Just found this little nugget. The NYC debating society

Jan 3, 2020, 10:49 AM

prohibited Soleimani from leaving Iran way back in 2015. They enacted a "travel ban", lol.

And there you have it. Another shitstorm for enforcing an edict of the NYC debating society. Granted, he broke it by visiting Russia the same year to meet with Putin, and Obama did nothing.

Jan 3, 2020, 10:53 AM

Thank you for at least being a Trump supporter who isn't hypocritical/flip flopping in this arena.

More evidence we have given way too much power to the executive branch over the decades, and Trump clearly isn't the only offender in this case.

a member of any military and was acting rogue. He was not a state actor.

This recent hit was a member of Iran's military.
