ESPN:ACC revenue per school is behind only PAC 12 and Big 10
May 10, 2012, 1:40 PM
|

ESPN is reporting ACC revenue is above SEC per school. In trying to follow expansion talk and increased revenue, this seems to be an argument to stay in the ACC. What am I missing??

The new SEC TV Deal is estimated to be between 24-27 million per school along with SEC Network revenue to be shared.

Let's say they get $27 million from CBS and ESPN.

How much more on top of that will they get from establishing a SEC Network?

For starters, the Big 10 is well above the ACC. And the new Big 12 deal will top ours, it just isn't official till next week.....

Couple of things
May 10, 2012, 1:42 PM
|
|
1) The SEC contract is old. Its like Eli getting paid more than Peyton. They will catch up and/or pass with the next round.
2) The SEC (and Big 12) have multiple major networks in their fold. We are dependent on ESPN/ABC.

they add a SEC Network on top of that, I don't even want to think about the money they will be getting, as it will only make me sick.

True, but it all starts on the field...

The SEC commands a big premium because they deliver in crunch time in big games. The ACC needs our power programs to step up and be relevant again. I'm mainly talking about FSU & Miami. Same thing with some other schools. Clemson is finally stepping up. VT has pulled their weight. It wouldn't hurt if one of the NC schools started making some noise.
In aggregate, if we improve on the field, then we can demand more money. Until then, Swofford doesn't have much leverage compared to Slive.
Football is driving about 80% of the TV deals now across college athletics. Our focus on basketball as a conference is hurting our pockets now more than it did 20 years ago.

In fairness to FSU, they finished 16th in the nation in 2010

while we finished 22nd last season. Thus, FSU is stepping it up.

How is Clemson stepping up. Did they finish in the top 10 or win a BCS bowl game? If you mean beating other ACC teams is stepping up, I guess you are right. But inter-conference play and BCS bowl wins is what makes power conferences.
Clemson, FSU and Va Tech have power conference type fan bases in football. The rest of the ACC does not. This hurts the ACC in football and makes it tough to become a power conference.

So, we're obviously getting hosed on that deal as well since he leaks details to his son.

the other conferences have additional revenue by maintaining tier 2 and/or 3 rights.
Also, SEC is yet to renegotiate.

Agree about Swofford. But what leverage does he have?...

Football is driving the TV money now. And we have 1 BCS victory TOTAL since FSU won their MNC in 1999.
The SEC has won 7 of the last 9 national championships, including 6 in a row. And you could argue that Auburn got ripped off in 2004.
Imagine walking up to the negotiating table with that record as opposed to the ACC's record in BCS games.

All the acc did is give the sec a bargaining chip. Now they can say that the acc is making this much so we deserve at least this much and they are gonna get an even bigger payout.

When Slive shows up to renegotiate the SEC deal
May 10, 2012, 2:37 PM
|

Since the last contract was 3 years ago. He can boast of 3 straight NC's in football, 3 straight NC's in baseball and the latest basketball NC. Also the addition of Texas A&M and Missouri and the TV markets of Texas and Missouri. Not a bad position to be negotiating from. I expect an increase that get SEC teams to $30 mil per team.
