One, same as Brownlee. Those of us who follow Clemson sports remember in 2007 Clemson finished the regular season ranked 16th and was selected for the Chic-fil-a bowl, which was 7th in the bowl pecking order. Same as making the Sweet 16. Expectations were high in 2008, when Tommy fell flat on his face. The similarities between the 2 coaches so far is striking after same time period:
TB BB National titles 0 0 Conference Titles 0 0 Conference Championship Game appearances 0 0 Top 10 finishes 0 0
Just want Clemson to be a factor in the conference once in a while. That is not too much to ask.

It is in fact probably too much to ask when you see the difference in talent between Clemson and teams who make it to these games you speak of. It’s easy to try and get players who go to the Dukes of the world but kids prefer the Dukes

Clemson Basketball all time...
National Titles: 0 Conference Titles: 0 - only ACC counts ... 1 if you want to count 1939. We were 6-6 and went into a lucky SoCon run ACC Championship Appearances: 2 Top 10 Finishes: 0.5 (Coaches but not AP) - a barnes team
It is kinda hard to blame Brownell for no accomplishing anything that basically no one else really succeed at...
Sure Purnell got to the ACC champ game but he could not win in the Tourney.
I want to be a factor too... but it might be too much to ask considering the arms race between the other ACC programs. Virginia, Duke, Carolina just are not going anywhere....

Failing at Clemson in football is a much bigger failure than failing here at basketball.
Just like failing at Maryland in basketball is much bigger than failing there in football

OP got us to the tournament his last 3 years in a row. Rick Barnes got us to the tournament 3 out of his 4 years, and those 3 years were in a row at Clemson, and he also got us to a Sweet 16. He went to the tournament 19 out of 21 years between Clemson and Texas. People just make excuses for CBB. Tommy West, Ken Hatfield, Tommy Bowden couldn't get it done in football. Dabo could. Some people are just better at their jobs.

Name a coach that took us to 3 straight NCAA appearances and was the coach the next year....
Now name the coach with the best ACC winning % Yup, that is Brad Brownell.[b/]
OP was a good coach and worked the press to "outperform" the talent level. It if wasn't for Booker being under-recruited (Wofford, W&M, and the coots) and then developing like a god-send, OP would not have made those tournaments. But here is the other thing.... OP would have needed to rebuild in 2011 and 2012. Booker was his success. Now here is the other issue... Brownell is .47 in ACC play at vs .44 of OP. Now, OP was rebuilding but BB's competition is stiffer with UL, Cuse, etc. Were Clemson would be #3 compared to the blue basketball teams, our ceiling is now closer to #6 with other schools being a better program.
Barnes is a heck of a coach (if a prick) and moved to better programs. Which is my point... Texas. Nothing like being the biggest school in the 2nd largest state with a LOT of metro areas to recruit. Anyone that comes in to Clemson, leads us to 3 straight NCAA tourneys, a 16 in 4 years WILL jump to another program. And the funny thing... Brownell is winning more ACC game than BARNES!
Brownell should have 3 NCAA appearances (snubbed badly in '14)... and really should have left us last year.
VS ACC teams
Brownell .478 OP .446 Barnes .438 Ellis .384 Foster .372
Yeah, chill, he is a good coach and realistically, this team could be 6-13 rather than 13-5 at this time. It is a FLAWED team but BB is coaching it above their level... it is just missing the 3 threat... one player.

Purnell also inherited a dumpster fire. Most of his conference losses were during the first 3 seasons.
His last 3 he had a winning record in conference play every year.
And Brownell of course inherited a solid program with the one of the best incoming recruiting classes in Clemson history.

in the way of recruits.
Marcus Thornton was interested in us, but ended up going to Georgia. He was a 4 star recruit who didn't do much in Athens.
Other than that, there was nothing. I believe that is part of the reason why Purnell bolted for DePaul and that nice contract.
Because the cupboard was so bare, Brownell brought Cory Stanton with him, who was originally committed to Wright State. He wasn't ACC caliber, but he was a body.

The cupboard was not bare. His first year he was loaded and had a young McDonald’s All american who would not live up to expectations which falls squarely on Brownell.

The ACC used to be a lot tougher than how it became under CBB. We all know Rick Barnes is a better coach and recruiter.

Who inherited a better situation between Bowden, CBB, and West? How about between West and Bowden? Maybe CBB is more of Ken Hatfield? They both inherited a decent situation.

Hatfield inherited a team from Danny Ford that had a top ranked defense that he quickly dismantled. No one else is close to being as bad. Hired Dickerson as defensive back coach which is probably the worst assistant coach hire ever.

Everyone had excuses for Tommy West, when all we wanted was to be competitive in football. Everyone has excuses for Brownell. More time, better facilities, football school, blah, blah, blah. He needs to go.

Last season was the ceiling for Clemson BB and CBB can not keep us at that level. As proved we are usually a 16-15 type team with CBB.

I thought Ken Hatfield was the worst. Ken Hatfield tore down a great program to leave for West who sucked also.

Whoever followed Danny Ford was doomed to fail no matter what, so I give Hatfield a pass. Hatfield wasn’t great, but West was very mediocre, and that’s being kind. We don’t settle for mediocrity in football or baseball. Why do we settle for it in basketball? For some reason, “Best is the Standard” for everything except basketball.
