ACC championship needs to be played each yr at the higher

Nov 11, 2012, 8:17 AM

Ranked teams home field. Almost guarantees a sellout, and helps the conference by bolstering it's top team. Thoughts?

Great idea. or alternate it between the coastal/ atlantic winner.

I think Charlotte is perfect.

Nov 11, 2012, 8:29 AM

It's an ACC town.
It's centrally located.
It's an "event" (does anyone know the deal between Charlotte and the ACC? Like how the financials work).
It's a defined space (Wake Forest won the ACC a few years back...are you willing to show the world an ACC Championship Game in a 30,000 seat stadium, not to mention lose out on about 30,000 extra ticket sales and luxury suite sales?)

The Charlotte championship game has had great attendance both years, right? I now our game was a madhouse.

make some sort of financial incentive for smaller stadiums

Nov 11, 2012, 8:35 AM

Or schools to either improve their stadium or play it at the other schools stadium.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

That just doesn't make sense

Nov 11, 2012, 8:38 AM

A school like Wake Forest has no reason to increase the capacity of their stadium just to accomodate the ACC championship game. No school would its not like they are selling out and refuse to put more money into it. They are already about at their peak capacity wise.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Split proceeds evenly and play at larger stadium if there

Nov 11, 2012, 8:41 AM

Is a significant diff in size.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Why would it leave Charlotte.

Nov 11, 2012, 8:44 AM

It has been a sellout there the past two years.
It is centrally located, with a good amount of ACC fans.
They sell a good number of seats even before the matchup is announced.

I just don't follow your reasoning.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

We'll see if it's a sellout if a crappy coastal team gets in

Nov 11, 2012, 8:48 AM

The championship game.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

That wouldn't be fair. Sorry Wake Forest, you have to go

Nov 11, 2012, 10:02 AM [ in reply to Split proceeds evenly and play at larger stadium if there ]

play in Blacksburg because your stadium isn't big enough. Forget about that little rule that says the higher ranked teams gets home field, it doesn't apply to you guys.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Less capacity higher the price of ticket***

That is the way the PAC 12 Does it.....

Makes good sense to me.....

I think you need to send your suggestion to Bank Of America, and John Swofford.
One small hint however.Did you stop to think what kind of image that would present to the nation,or the region if Duke,or UNC was the higher seed?
Playing before a half empty Bank of America Stadium is still better than playing before a full house at either Duke ,or Durham.

The championship game has been fine in Charlotte***

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I don't really care other than I think the Charlotte venue

Nov 11, 2012, 8:56 AM

gives the game more of a festive, bowl-type atmosphere.

Disagree, at the school with the biggest stadium...

Charlotte is perfect.

Nov 11, 2012, 9:10 AM

Central Location
Bowl Atmosphere
Support From The City

The attendance numbers support this. Everyone remember how empty the stadium(s) were when the game was in Florida? Those games were sad.

I live an hour from Charlotte so it is very convenient for

Nov 11, 2012, 9:16 AM

Me. just trying to think outside the box about what we can do to ensure good attendance in "off" years and financially reward teams that do well and invest in their teams and stadiums.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

It is crazy to think that Wake Forest or Duke will turn

Nov 11, 2012, 9:33 AM

their stadiums into 60,000 seat facilities for the once-every-third-generation situation where they are the highest ranked team in the conference.

The idea that the highest ranked team should host means:
We could play in Wake's 32,000 seat stadium.
We could play in Duke's 35,000 seat stadium.
We could play a football game in December in Boston or Pittsburgh.
We could really soldify a "little brother" image by playing in GT's stadium at the same time as the SEC playing in the Georgia Dome.
We could have to change venues the week before the game because of a ranking change.

We would have to deal with all of those possibilities and we would gain what? The ACCCG has sold out the past two years. Before we start desperately throwing out solutions, could we actually have a problem first?

By the way, Wake has invested significantly in their stadium over the past several years. Just not in capacity expansion, because they don't need it. Also, Duke just announced major renovations coming to Wallace Wade, including removing the track, adding seating, and closing in the horseshoe into more of a bowl.

You think Duke, MD, BC, Pitt, Cuse, WF would vote for that?*
