it would have been a non issue. That was the point. You can blame W. There's a few trillion give or take.

You see, there was Never a war in Iraq.

A Declaration of War was never passed. However, H.J.Res. 114 (107th): Authorization for Use of Military Force Against Iraq Resolution of 2002 was passed on a 77 to 23 vote, which included Yea votes from 29 from the 50 Democratic senators.
However, if you had taken the time to read those articles, you would see it was Obama who cut defense, arguably to fund his social programs.
But hey, the liberals will blame Bush for anything.

You know in 15 years Afghanistan will still be one of those **itholes. I understand why we went to Afghanistan. In the end it will never work though. It's a waste sadly.

Iraq actually looked like the greater success until we changed strategy a few years ago.

Sounds good....but, it won't work. You can't go into sovereign countries and 'set up' governments.
We tried that in Central America in the 50's and 60's, we even assassinated the popularly elected President of Guatemala in 1954.
It was a tragic mess. So now, we don't take over other countries for our own purposes, that is Imperialism.

The best thing to do with Afghanistan

and especially Iraq is to let a strong (US backed and friendly) dictator be put back into place.
Their culture and history require a dictator.
Our problem was we tried to instill democracy in a place that democracy can not exist.
Unfortunately many people had to die for that realization.

$600 to $650 billion / year is hardly dismantling.

What is the right mission? What is the right funding? What is the right management to eliminate waste and boondoggle weapons programs? Is more funding required for pay and the non-glamorous maintenance aspects of our military?
All of those questions need to be answered to ensure a strong and agile military- without hawkish posturing or ill advised cuts.
Back in the 70s, 80s and 90s a lot of hard and political decisions were made regarding base closings and weapon systems. Detailed and objective analysis, while rare, is needed.

Numerous reasons.

[ in reply to You said "Sounds nuts to me." Why?*** ] |

1. Sounds slightly like Trump's Fire and Fury comments as far as more war talk. 2. I think of the military buildup that was needed to defeat Hitler and the Japs as not even comparable. He is making it sound like he thinks we are in those times again. 3. Sounds like the nutcase is hyping up the need for war or pending danger of an eminent war.. 4. We are already the best equipped most powerful military in the world without a close second. I am sure we need upgrades as always, but sounds like he thinks we need them for his pending war we are facing very soon. 5. It sounds unstable on the world stage.

It is nuts, first you need to audit the DOD
Jan 20, 2018, 12:36 PM
|
|
They announced in Dec.2017 the first audit ever of the Dept. of Defense. Meaning, we have no idea how and where the DOD spends the money it receives.
Think about that for a second....Trillions have gone to the DOD by no accountability of how it's been spent.
Finish the Audit before you start throwing more money at it. Far too many people see military spending as a sign of patriotism. That's a little dangerous.
"The Defense Department has famously never been audited, despite receiving hundreds of billions of dollars annually and having more than $2.2 trillion in assets."
