I tend to mix things that happened in the 60's and early 70's, but way back then there were silly joke fads- elephant jokes, grape jokes, Tom Swifties etc. A counter to this trend were non-sequitur gags where the punch-line didn't quite fit the joke. Don't recall the set-up but "No soap, radio" was one such punchline and was synonymous with the genre.

Actually this is a real joke that honestly, you would have to be in an elevator to get the punchline. It’s actually pretty clever and I would suspect that Tbalm was in an elevator when he conceived of it. Next time your in an elevator, I’m sure you will get it.

My grandpa told this version of that joke. A doctor is making late night rounds in a hospital. Things are really hectic. A nurse comes up to him and asks him "doctor, could you please sign this chart?" He starts signing it and the nurse points out "doctor, that a rectal thermometer." He looks at it and says "I'll be ######, some ahole's got my pen."
Q: What's the difference between an oral and rectal thermometer?
