They have such high hopes . I take it as a point of pride that this writer would mention us with the Alabamas and Ohio States and FSU's of the world ...teams that we beat this year on our way to this National Championship season .
They are in no way ever going to get there because it is my firm belief that they permanently languish in that 3rd tiered echelon of CFB , with the UNC/Kentucky and Washington State type teams that are just simply NOT football relevant and never have been . That's a tough hole to crawl out of , as it is deep and wide .

LOL at the comments. Coots are still dropping '5 in a row'

What a sad bunch. That's all they have. Not to mention, even including the '5' we've still won 13 out of 20, and more National Titles than they have Conference Titles. Let that sink in.

USC was 9-0, ranked 2nd, and somehow lost at Navy. It got real, real fast. The future is always surprising

If they couldn't get it done during that span then they should just be happy with that run. It was a great run too. But leave national championship talk to the big boys

First of all recruiting is absolutely important. And yes, you need a lot of 4 and 5 star guys to win a NC. BUT, we didn't just all of a sudden get a huge wealth of talent. We built it. So USC, if you really want a NC, you have to change your culture first. Because a pathetic fan base who's totally engrossed with their rival, who don't have to invest more than a 20-minute drive or so to games, who see a football game as a social event where it's a tailgating party with a football game as a side show, in an ugly urban/industrial landscape, in a second-rate large city run by corrupt politicians, with an ####### super-serious workaholic for a head coach. It won't work.
Here's why Clemson will always be better than USC. Because Clemson sells itself. Dabo is a helluva salesman, and Clemson is a helluva easy place to sell. Combine the two, and you get those 4 and 5 star guys. Then it's a vision, an attitude, and a culture that the coach installs within the team that takes them the rest of the way. USC has brought in legendary coaches who have failed miserably there. Time and time again. Lou Holtz was a heck of a guy. He knew exactly what the problem was at USC, but he couldn't fix it. Spurrier did the best (ever) with that program. Why? Because as a coach, he was the closest to the fanbase as far as personality. He "fit in" at USC. But USC ain't Gainesville and it ain't Duke. USC fans are, as a whole, like a bunch of ESPN analysts really. Win, and they're a bunch of arrogant bandwaggon jerks. Lose, and they quit. That's Spurrier in a nutshell.
Some people "get" Clemson. They get that Clemson is bigger than a coach, bigger than a sport, bigger than a fan base. As a student I "got" Clemson. I went to 100 Clemson games or more before setting foot on the campus as a student. And I was a FANATIC for Clemson football. By my senior year, I had seen so much more of Clemson than football that I really was less of a football fan and even more of a CLEMSON fan. CJ Spiller saw that. Dabo saw that. BV has seen it. DW has seen it. Boulware has seen it. Every one of those players on the stage who spoke Saturday had seen it. All that needed to happen at Clemson was we needed a coach to see what makes Clemson unique. A coach who understands what makes Clemson a special place and can appreciate that, identify with it, and then sell it. That person was Danny Ford in another era. Today that's Dabo Swinney.
Then you just have to go find good coaches and the rest will happen on its own. When Danny Ford left and went to Arkansas, he never had success there. When Lou Holtz went to USC, he never had success there. Brad Scott failed miserably at USC. You could take Clemson's entire coaching and football staff, move them to Columbia, and they would not succeed. Honestly, with USC's fan base, culture, location, and history, there's really no way they will ever be elite in football, at least until they start looking at and changing everything that isn't football at the school. They will have their runs, and they will have Black Magic seasons. But in the end, they will never get that ratio this guy's talking about because you can't put lipstick on a pig. The only way USC wins a NC is to get rid of the pig and put lipstick on a supermodel.
But parents are ALWAYS going to steer their 5-star sons to a school with a family atmosphere, with a coach who cares about his players, in an environment secluded from the ill effects of an urban setting, where they can grow into men the right way. That's not going to happen at USC.

and spot on. I have lived in Columbia for 23 years ( since graduating from Clemson in 93). It is like the Carolina Cup for them 6-7 times in the fall. They do all of their fun stuff all day like soccer games, yard work and then head over to the "yard" to tailgate. They are horrible losers and worse winners. They will NEVER change and as you said their best...and it was pretty good....left when Spurrier quit on them. They know it.
