the team stays in a hotel before home games. Anyone know the reason?

Keeps the team together for a meal on Friday, gives them time for an activity together (usually a movie, I think), and makes sure everyone arrives on time for the game. That's what I've heard through the years.

Keeps them out of the 1-2-3 Truck Stop on the night before a game! For you young uns, All American tackle Wayne Mass got stabbed before a game in 67 or 68.

I think it's also so the coaches can ensure the players don't party too much the night before the game. I think all teams do this. I went to a UVA game with a friend once. We had a room reserved but the hotel messed up and rented it out. The only place left to put us was on the floor with the UVA team. I was tempted to pull the fire alarm at 4 a.m. but there is a guy sitting in the hallway all night.
