You don’t even have to be a ww2 buff to enjoy it. Very well done.

audience with seats shaking and light explosions for the segment on the Battle of the Bulge. They then take you up in the Onola Gay flight that drops the A Bomb on Hiroshima. The explosion is incredible.
They also have historic planes mounted from the ceiling in a large viewing room. My Dad was a tail gunner in a torpedo bomber on the carrier, Nehenta Bay in the South Pacific at both Iwo Jima and Okinawa. So, that was something really important to me.
The museum is a must stop in N.O.

Some friends of our went on a helicopter tour of the city one night and really seemed to enjoy it.
Also be sure to feed him some bignets. A lot of places serve them but the two best places for them IMO are Cafe Du Monde and the New Orleans Coffee & Beignet Co.

I understand that the coffee is strong at the cafe du monde, and the doughnuts are too hot to touch.

The Idea Factory has a lot of cool puzzles, toys, gifts, and other items all made out of wood. I don't know your son, but I've been accused of having the maturity of a 10 year old, and I make it a point to check this place out every time I'm in town. The address is 924 Royal St. A couple of blocks from Jackson Square (which is where you'll find the Cafe du Monde - THE place to get the full New Orleans beignet experience). http://ideafactoryneworleans.com https://shop.cafedumonde.com

Ride the street car to grab a bite to eat at Commander’s Palace. Walk around Tulane’s campus.
Eat raw oysters on the half shell at Acme.
Lunch and bloodies at Mother’s.

Eat plenty of cajun food - every meal. And it doesn't have to be fancy restaurants, Some of the mom & pop places are the best.

Every "old" town i visit, i never miss the cemeteries...I am not a ghoul, but the statuary and mausoleums are fantastic...Savannah,NO,Key West,Arlington,Richmond,etc...The ones in New Orleans are especially iconic..

Stay in your hotel room. Avoid eye contact with locals and carry if you do.
Oh, and enjoy the local cuisine such as corn dogs and Mayonnaise.

It's about a 75-minute drive to LSU to see Mike the Tiger and the other Death Valley.
If you're trying to social distance there are smaller, less crowded locations of Cafe du Monde incuding one in Metairie about 10 minutes from the airport.

Most of my suggestions would be alcohol involved. However wife and I enjoyed walking around Garden District as well as the previous named local eateries.
