I'll just leave this right here....

May 17, 2017, 12:30 PM

"Excessive drinking is responsible for more than 4,300 deaths among underage youth each year, and cost the U.S. $24 billion in economic costs in 2010. Although drinking by persons under the age of 21 is illegal, people aged 12 to 20 years drink 11% of all alcohol consumed in the United States."

https://www.cdc.gov/alcohol/fact-sheets/underage-drinking.htm

How many are killed by cops each year? A dozen at most? And the majority are justifiable....

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Clearly, those are the bad, misguided kids whose parents

May 17, 2017, 12:33 PM

didn't teach them that drinking is bad. YOUR kids will certainly never drink alcohol before they're 21, because you told them not to.

For all the dumb stuff you post, I find it very, very difficult to believe that you're this naive.

May 17, 2017, 1:40 PM

They're not to me, but apparently to you and the others on here they are, because my simple statement that a 15 year old shouldn't have been at a house party ruffled a few feathers it seems.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

The problem, of course

May 17, 2017, 12:37 PM

Is that when the first takes place (underage drinking), the consequence shouldn't be the second (being shot by a cop). Trotting out the tragedy of loss of life due to underage drinking as a response to a teen at a party being shot by a cop is not only piss-poor logic, it reeks of formulating an excuse for the shooting.

Oops. I didn't realize jhop was doing that. Figured it was for an honest discussion.

Re: The problem, of course

May 17, 2017, 1:22 PM [ in reply to The problem, of course ]

Agreed....who used that logic?

It certainly wasn't me.

I was informed by several posters on here that teen partying is unpreventable and that EVERYBODY will do it.

I guess my sister, wife, and multiple other people I know who never took a sip in their life are just figments of my imagination.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

And again

May 17, 2017, 1:29 PM

When I pointed out that no amount of good parenting is going to prevent EVERY teen (or any particular teen) from partying, you said my attitude (which is simply reality) is the problem.

And YOU are the one which brought up the "why was he partying" question in the discussion of a teen shot by a police officer, as if that question somehow has any relevancy to the OUTCOME.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-20yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: And again

May 17, 2017, 1:38 PM

But it was relevant to the outcome....because if the young man wouldn't have been at a house party where these types of things happen he'd still be here. That doesn't excuse the cop, and I clearly said he should be punished to the fullest extent of the law.

As the statistics in the OP prove underage drinking is a much bigger threat than a rogue cop, so this "what the hell everybody does it" attitude is just mind blowing.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

What is the point?

May 17, 2017, 2:00 PM

Whether you like it or not, whether you intend it or not, when faced with the troubling story of a kid being shot by a police officer a response of "why was he even there" *IS* going to be seen as trying to place some burden of guilt onto the kid and away from the person ultimately responsible. It's a simple reality, and I hear ya, you say you didn't intend that. Cool. But know, thats how it will always be heard because that is a common distraction and debate tactic that has been trotted repeatedly (ex. "why was her skirt so short?").

But, I still find it odd you somehow think recognizing the reality that some kids ARE going to go out and make what we would see as unwise decisions even with parenting to the contrary is somehow the same as giving them permission to do so. I've counseled, taught, and tried to guide my kids to make wise decisions. No doubt, somewhere along the way one (heck, all) of them will make unwise decisions in one area or another. Recognizing that reality is rational and sane, and in fact it helps us as parents prepare ourselves to help them come through those situations with as little damage as possible.

BTW, on another note, you've been oddly quiet concerning that list of complaints you have about Trump ( http://www.tigernet.com/forums/message.jspa?messageID=21572044#21572044 ).

I agree, jhop. He shouldn't have been at a party (and i don't think you'll find many adults being ok with him at a party)

Re: I'll just leave this right here....

May 17, 2017, 12:38 PM

With three sons at home, i know its likely at least one if not all three will eventually sneak to parties, etc. Nothing we do will prevent that 100%.

But, i believe we still do our part with education, knowing their friends, etc. (And maybe devices on their vehicles that they don't know about lol)

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Be careful

May 17, 2017, 12:41 PM

It seems your eyes are opened to the fact that no amount of good parenting can dictate the choices of your children... that makes you, evidently, part of the problem in Jhop's eyes.

He, evidently, thinks realizing that good parenting doesn't always lead to wise decisions by the teenager is the same as handing them a beer and some keys.

Re: Be careful

Many people forget their childhood.

I have the best parents imaginable but still snuck out the house a couple of times, still tried weed, did a little partying etc. (When i got to college and realized how hard meteorology was, i grew up)

I've got a cousin just like that. Not long ago i pointed out to him how short his memory is. I heard him carrying on about peoples parenting skills so i pointed out a few things he did at that age. And reminded him it didn't reflect on his parents.

Also, no crap not ALL teens party....but the majority definitely...even at least once. Not all of us were raised in cult like Bob Jones house holds like you.

Reminds me of the arguments fans make about rival schools.

I always point out that they are 18-20 year old kids, if you don't think the same partying, drugs etc is going on at your favorite school, get your head out of the sand.

I kinda feel for people like jhop, tho. He is the type that will be hit like a ton of bricks when his kid decides to party.

Re: Yep you're definitely a Trump guy.

May 17, 2017, 3:07 PM

I'm sorry but it amazes me how some of you jump to conclusions and put words in my mouth. I won't be surprised at all because I was that kid.

I partied my butt off through high school and early 20's against the wishes and guidance of my parents, and I'm lucky to be here today. A couple of my close friends weren't so lucky. That's why I won't be sending the message to my kids that's it's ok because everybody does it. They may rebel, but it will be against their father's wishes....

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Jump to conclusions?

May 17, 2017, 3:29 PM

Earlier this morning I said this:

"But in the end it won't be up to you as a parent to get to decide that, and pretending like your (or my) actions as a parent will somehow make our kids be members of the later group is ostrich-head-in-the-sand level blindness."

to which you replied:

"Your head is clearly in the sand if you think a persons upbringing doesn't play a huge role in the decisions they make in life.

Attitudes like yours is why you see cars wrapped around trees with drunk teenagers inside all the time.

I bet their parents wish their attitude would have been different than yours....
"

This doesn't jive with your outlook in your latest post.

To be clear my assertion is:
1) Some kids, regardless of upbringing, parental influence, etc will choose to make unwise decisions
2) It is not misguided to recognize this and when it occurs it won't be the fault of the parent who tried to teach them to make wise decisions.
