Big 12 vs the ACC

One thing is for sure, whether you like the move of ND to the ACC or not, the ACC and ND just took a big deuce on the Big 12. It was widely known that the Big 12 was willing to take ND as a partial member. So, not only did ND chose the ACC over the Big 12, the ACC upped the buyout from the conference to 50 mil+ so no one from the ACC is going anywhere else. I wonder how the poor Dude and other Big 12 bloggers feel now.

According to them, the Big12 was likely trying to get ND, then FSU/Clemson. That plan has been obliterated.

The Big 12 got some bad news today after the news broke that Notre Dame will be joining the Atlantic Coast Conference.
The Irish will join the Atlantic Coast Conference as a full member in every sport but football. And the Irish have guaranteed to play at least five ACC opponents each season, beginning as soon as they can get out of their Big East affiliation.
This is significant for several reasons. Rumors had been bouncing around the blogosphere that Notre Dame and the Big 12 were flirting with a similar deal with the Irish. The close relationship between Texas athletic director DeLoss Dodds and Big 12 commissioner (and former Stanford athletic director) Bob Bowlsby with Notre Dame athletic director Jack Swarbrick was supposed to be a big plus.
Somehow, those friendships couldn’t convince the Irish that heading into a conference with Texas, Oklahoma and the rest made sense. Instead Notre Dame will look south and east.
The addition of the Irish means their dalliance with the Big Ten is over. They will now be hooked up with the nation’s best traditional basketball conference with a chance to play schools like Duke, North Carolina, Maryland, Syracuse and Pitt on a yearly basis. It also means their football team will be playing against teams like Duke, North Carolina, Maryland, Syracuse and Pitt — which might be what Notre Dame ultimately wanted.
Notre Dame and the ACC are a perfect fit in football.
The ACC is 1-12 in BCS-affiliated bowls since 2000. They placed two teams in BCS bowls only once and that was last season. Michigan beat Virginia Tech in the Sugar Bowl and Clemson endured a humiliating 70-33 loss to West Virginia last season.
Notre Dame hasn’t been much better. The Irish haven’t won a BCS-associated bowl since 1992 and are 2-10 in bowl games since 1995. They haven’t finished in the top 10 in the final polls since 1993.
The association looks better than it is, but Notre Dame immediately improves the ACC’s brand. The effect will be seen when the ACC finishes negotiating their upcoming television deal.
And that’s where it really hurts the Big 12. Suddenly, Florida State and Clemson aren’t going to be that disappointed with their ACC television deals infused with the addition of Notre Dame.
Wednesday’s announcement effectively takes the Big 12?s three top expansion contenders off the table.
Bowlsby has maintained that he wants the Big 12 to be “the most exclusive fraternity” in college sports before it adds expansion members.
The biggest expansion target now is gone and two others that might have been interested in the Big 12 likely won’t be moving.
Bowlsby has said that the Big 12 is happy with 10 members.
It looks like it might stay that way for the next few years.
