I just ordered new hub caps for my boat trailer in 3 clicks. They will be here in 2 days.

Our ancestors could only a dream of a world like this.

This is the greatest time in history to be alive.

We are not headed for destruction. I believe the human race will rule the universe within the next 200 years.

You don't need to worry about 200 years though. Maybe 60 more max.

the challenges are real, and it's easy to focus on that. As we evolve however, we are constantly moving forward with tremendous discoveries and advancements that make our lives better, but we also lose things along the way. It's inevitable, it's always been that way, and it's just the way the universe works. Every generation, as they get older, thinks things overall are getting worse; it's not a 2024 phenomenon.

Sure, now that I'm an old fart, I see some things changing in ways I don't really like, and some things I value seem to be slipping away. But overall, I see humanity as amazing, where the good outweighs the bad. I am determined not to let my narrow experience warp my perspective and turn me into one who wastes away, becoming more and more negative while longing for the way things used to be. Personally, I have had health issues that 40 years ago would have had me dead or living a very different, limited life. Instead I now live a fairly normal, healthy, happy life, thanks to the medical advancements. And that ranks right up there with 3 click ordering from Amazon and unlimited tv/movie/entertainment on a tv with a picture quality my father could not have dreamed of. I agree with you, and I don't believe a loving God created all of this just to have it taken over by evil and eventually self-destruct.

And just think, the reason for those medical advancements is that someone cared enough to research and find a way for you to live the life you're living today. That's another thing that amazes me about humanity...the way we take care of each other.

"I agree with you, and I don't believe a loving God created all of this just to have it taken over by evil and eventually self-destruct."

It's crazy and a little bit scary that a large portion of the population actually believe that eventually most of us will be in a place of eternal torment.

Yes on the hubcaps but they won't change the oil in the foot of your motor.

Yes, even the poorest Americans live better than Kings. Imagine trying to heat a castle with wood or coal? We have houses with heat and AC, clean water which won't give you the runs, fresh food at the tap of a button on your phone which can link you to just about any information from anywhere in the world.

We have entertainment but what we are missing which is important in interpersonal contact. That's a problem for we are not as considerate of one another as in days past and we lack the respect which bind us to each other.

As far as us conquering the universe I give a definitely maybe. I had a conversation with a poster with the handle of 'Bobcob,' or 'Bobcobb,' here some years ago. He was throwing off on the education of the shepherds who recorded the Bible.

I did a short research at the time and discovered that our level of information and knowledge of our world was doubling about every 25 years. Considering that, in just half a century those alive will view us as we view those shepherd 3 thousand years ago. A more recent search revealed that the 25 years has been cut in half.

My doubts as to humans conquering the universe in 200 years remains. Humans knew about gravity and magnetism thousands of years before we found a name for them and began to define them as they are defined today. Still, we have almost no understanding of why they work. I'm not saying we are exceptionally ignorant but just addressing some of our limits on physics which is exactly what may prevent our exploration of the universe.

It's likely that if there is another inhabitable planet that by the time we realize it's inhabitable it will be gone via some natural disaster. Those we might reach may not have been created yet.

So a definite maybe on humans conquering the universe.

I'm glad to be alive and living a good part of my life. Praise God!

Yea I agree that we need to be entertained way too much now days. I think that's why interest in professional sports have declined. Used to only a select few games were on Tv, now you have channels dedicated to covering it so we are force fed 247 and it just gets old.

Everything has been done also. There is too much competition. Go look at Micheal Jordans greatest plays, and you'll see those on an average regular season game in the NBA every night.

I even found myself getting a little bored with Clemson football around 2018ish when we were blowing everybody out by 50 points.

So yes too much of something is almost never good. You have to find a healthy balance. I actually think that social media has enhanced interpersonal contact because when I see people for the first time in a long time, we have plenty to talk about because we are able to keep up with each other.

This thread reminds me of the perils of the speed of technology, and ease of "bubbling" one's-self into a perpetual loop of affirmation and confirmation bias. Moreso than ever, we can "make" the world what we want it to be, by only choosing the things we want to hear or see; whether that ends up being for good or for bad. That is,one can eat all the candy they want, but is it good for you?

This was a 1992 album based on a book from the same idea.

"Postman argued that by expressing ideas through visual imagery, television reduces politics, news, history and other serious topics to entertainment. He worried that culture would decline if the people became an audience and their public business a "vaudeville act". He also argued that television is destroying the "serious and rational public conversation" that was sustained for centuries by the printing press. Rather than the restricted information in George Orwell's 1984, he claimed the flow of distraction we experience is akin to Aldous Huxley's Brave New World.

He repeatedly states that the eighteenth century, the "Age of Reason", was the pinnacle for rational argument. Only in the printed word, he states, could complicated truths be rationally conveyed. Postman gives a striking example: many of the first fifteen U.S. presidents could probably have walked down the street without being recognized by the average citizen, yet all these men would have been quickly known by their written words.

However, the reverse is true today. The names of presidents or even famous preachers, lawyers, and scientists call up visual images, typically television images, but few, if any, of their words come to mind. The few that do almost exclusively consist of carefully chosen soundbites."

Even when I was in college, a few of my journalism school friends could see the transition from informed, in-depth articles to "McNews." Just surface level, quick quotes or headlines with little substance, little context, little background, and little thought. More informed stuff is out there, it's just buried deeper and deeper in quick shots and clickbait.

There is scientific evidence that that is exactly what we do. Not magic where you say I want a million dollars over and over and it appears. But if you set goals, look for the opportunities, and be willing to do what is necessary, the universe will give you what you want in life.

However we are hard wired to believe certain things that may not necessarily be true. To your example a lot of people believe that all democrats want wide open borders, homosexuality to be the norm, all guns confiscated, etc...They get this from hearing Republicans talking about Democrats, not from Democrats themselves.

I guess everyone has confirmation bias. Thankfully I tend to focus on things like my new hubcaps that were already delivered and on a holiday none the less.

This might be slightly before your time, but before the conferences called the NCAA's bluff in the '70s (I think) and started signing their own TV contracts, the broadcast contract was with the NCAA, and the NCAA told the network what game to broadcast. The NCAA was all about equality, and the one game broadcast that Saturday was as likely to be Princeton/Holy Cross as Notre Dame/USC. And we were thankful.

Not really. Thankful, I mean.

What an awful way to live. I complain about the non stop coverage but I'm the one watching Live at the Masters on tuesday morning at 9am and in our house it's a sin to ask for the remote on the weekend during football season.
