The greatest generation

Apr 25, 2020, 12:24 AM

Had a true “oh shit” moment tonight while replacing my countertops and kitchen sink.

I’d already turned off the hot supply and removed the hose, when I went to cut off the cold, the #### pipe snapped before I’d even put a tool on it. Gushing water hits me in the chest and I run a 4.2 laser timed 40 to cut off the main at the road.

It’s 6:45. Home Depot’s already closed, I’ve got 15 minutes to make it to Lowe’s.

Broke a few traffic laws and run inside grab the coupler and cement and a length of 1/2” pvc. Checked out at 6:58.

Get back to the house and start examining my eff up.

The line snapped right where it came through the back of the cabinet. I cut out around the pipe to get better access. Discovered the pipe actually sheared off right at a 3/4”-1/2” reducer with a T. I didn’t buy one of those. It’s 7:15.

Called my 80 year old granddad, just on a hunch that he’d be able to help. He makes 2 calls to his other old AF neighbors and has the piece I need within 15 minutes.

Water is restored. I can poop and flush.

I'm gonna save this and show it to Mrs No the next time

she complains about all the junk in my workshop. You just never know when you might need a 3/4"-1/2" reducer with a T.
