T-day traditions

Nov 24, 2021, 9:22 PM

For many years a T-Day tradition was to race the Charlotte Turkey Trot 5 miler.

The "best" lined up there from the South East due to the 'Running Journal' promotions.

It was hard to get a game with some of those guys who had real talent and trained hard. Some only raced a couple times a year. They would line up only when at "peak", so this was "opportunity" to test yourself.
Old guys my age 40-50 would be coming in from states around.

My friends were kinda trashy and lined up most weeks. We traveled together and tried to kill each other every Saturday in some town. Ego had been stomped out of us.

We always held our own. At 40-50 I could do a few 5:30 miles for that distance. The races on T-day at South Park were brutal.

On the way home opened a well earned beer and played Christmas tunes too loud in my truck.

I tried to replicate that at age 72 at the Anderson Turkey Trot with an extra 50 pounds and no training.
I was slow but could still do pain so kicked the geezers and won. Like always - the girls loved me. Unlike the old days, most of them beat me in. I may try that again at 80, or maybe next year.

All those girls (Diane Ford, Donna Presley, and Judy Walls) have set and own state records.
