asked questions on a post I made as to frequenting a bar located beside the Matthews police station that I could walk to. He surmised I was a Matthews cop. I was not on that force, but could walk to that bar and did so often. They did ask me to ride my Harley in the Parade one year, and I did teach some cop classes for them.

Old guys like me enjoy thinking back when the beer is cold.

I suspect many Clemson fans live in that area (Will Shipley).
Matthews is now an upscale town of over 30K where the median home is $352,000. I bought mine for $27,500 and was good there for 30 years.
It was a good home. Folks decorated at Christmas and kept up excellent lawns.

When I moved there in 1976, there were 3 cops (Chief, Sgt, Patrolman). They fired the Chief and promoted the Patrolman to Chief -- so the Sgt quit. We had one cop which was enough back then.

It was a 99% safe place where my Bride could jog at night, and I did not worry.
You could walk downtown on a Sunday and you "might" see a few cars pass.
I was 12 miles from my downtown Charlotte office, and she was about that from hers near South Park. It was a good place to live.

I never really saw it as "home", the plan was always to return to SOUTH CAROLINA after my mercenary days were over.

I moved from Greenville to Matthews when I was going into 10th grade. Went to East Meck for 1 year and moved to Fort Mill after that. Last time I was up that way it was unrecognizable. I did love to eat at a little restaurant called the Fireside.

That wasn't me...or at least I don't remember that conversation. However I do like cold beer! It's been awhile since I've been through Matthews. Sadly lots of the small town paradises in SC have been affected by "progress".
