I'm probably gonna get flamed for this but it just came up on ESPN Dabo was quoted as saying passing on Sammy would be like passing on Michael Jordan.
Lol. I don't understand why he continues to make outrageous statements like these.

Michael Jordan is the greatest player to ever pick up a basketball.
Is Sammy gonna be anything close to the greatest player to ever play football?

When Jordan was passed over in the draft
May 1, 2014, 3:42 PM
[ in reply to Re: Please point out the outrageous part. TIA*** ] |

did people think he would be the greatest player ever to pick up a basketball?
Is it really a stretch to imagine that Sammy could actually become the greatest player to ever play football? I know a lot of experts seem to think he's the most NFL ready player in the draft. I've heard so called draft experts talk about how he is truly a special football player.
I think as of their respective draft days there could be similar comparisons between the two. It's up to Sammy whether or not he will become the greatest ever.

I'm not gonna disagree with any of that but to compare a guy to Michael Jordan before he's ever even played a professional game?
The problem with Dabo is he says the stuff I would say after a few beers playing poker with my coot buddies out loud for everybody in the country to see that he said.

He didn't say he was gonna be one of the best.
He said he was gonna be the greatest to ever play the game like Jordan was to basketball.
This would have been better- "A lot of teams are gonna wish they didn't pass over Sammy Watkins if they do".
Don't say passing on him is gonna be like passing on a legend.

As someone who was actually alive during that time, maybe I can clear up the Jordan "got passed over" myth.
He played in a Dean Smith system that didn't allow him to do the things on pure talent he was allowed to do in the NBA. Understandable since teammates during his three years included Jimmy Black, James Worthy, Buzz Peterson, Joe Wolf, Steve Hale, Kenny Smith, Sam Perkins, Brad Daughtery and Matt Doherty.
When he came out as a junior he went third in the draft behind Hakeem Olajuwon and Sam Bowie. You can hardly blame Houston or Portland for going after legitimate centers. Sam may have ended up as a bust with his bad knees, but Portland has a history of going after big men and ignoring nagging leg injuries (See Bill Walton and Greg Odom).
The idea that Jordan was passed over is a convenient myth.

If 2 players were taken ahead of Jordan, how was he not passed up twice?
In my mind, drafting The Dream meant passing on Jordan and drafting Dream instead. Same with Portland.

If your NBA team needs a post player....

And you have Olajuwon, Bowie, Perkins and Turpin available then you aren't passing on Jordan, you are selecting a big man based on need.
Jordan's stats in college were never overly impressive.
http://www.sports-reference.com/cbb/players/michael-jordan-1.html
However, if you watched Jordan, or someone like Vince Carter, there was an aspect of athleticism that could not be denied. That being said, if your team need is a big man, then Jordan's college stats weren't going to make you stray from that path.

So what you're saying is

|
|
2 teams passed up a guard to draft a big man.
Semantics. When I say two teams passed up drafting Jordan, all I mean is that they elected to draft someone else, not a knock on MJ. It's the same as the Texans passing up Sammy because they need either a QB or DE.
Now that I think about it, Dabo is 100% right, when the Texans pass on drafting Sammy, it will be exactly like when Jordan got passed on...due to need.

Two teams got who they wanted and then Chicago got who they wanted.
It might be semantics, but words have meaning and when we ignore their meaning and choose a close alternative, then the message suffers with regards to accuracy.
Sammy may be great in the NFL, but I would feel better about that projection if he had continued to improve all three years at Clemson.

The jury is not out. Sammy hasn't even played a game in the NFL and he's already saying he's gonna be as great as Michael Jordan was in the NBA.
These quotes get embarrassing.
He said Kyle Parker was better than half the NFL QB's.
He said we were a national championship team after winning the Chik Fila bowl.
He said that whole world would be talking about the Clemson defense after the OB. Well, they were.
Earlier this spring he said we had 3 future NFL QB's on the roster.
He tends to exaggerate just a tad.

The jury is still out because in the end, Sammy may very well be the best receiver to ever play in the NFL. Therefore at this time we cannot say whether he will or he won't be. Thus, the jury is still out. Get it?
Phrased another way, do you think it is even remotely possible that one day Sammy will be considered the best player at his position in the history of the NFL?

Even if he is the best receiver to ever play that doesn't make him to the NFL what Michael Jordan was to the game of basketball.
And no, the jury is not still out. Sammy isn't even in the discussion. When he gets a few years in the league under his belt and starts putting up the numbers then maybe the jury will be out on whether Sammy is the best receiver ever.

You saying that the "jury is not still out" means that he has no hope of ever being a great NFL player...why do you think he has no hope? Why do you hate Sammy?
We don't know how good Sammy will be in the NFL, so "the jury is still out" on whether he will be great or not. Get it? Probably not.

You're a class act.
You know exactly what I mean when I say he's not in the discussion and instead of being a man and admitting that our coach likes to put his foot in his mouth or just not even responding you result to nit picking a small part of the argument to try and make me look stupid when you are really just showing your immaturity.

I'm going to give you the benefit of the doubt and assume you are actually a Clemson fan, but you are buying into the mentality of your coot poker buddies. Dabo is highly regarded as a coach. Statements like that shows how much he believes in his players. It makes kids want to play for him. Those statements you mentioned are all fine in my book. The only one I can remember that made me cringe was saying we would beat FSU 5 out of 10 times, when it was clear that FSU was by far a superior team.

He's still 22 *thousand* yards behind the GOAT.
Saying someone is going to surpass Jerry ####### Rice before he steps on an NFL field is ludicrous.
It was ludicrous when it was Randy Moss, and it's ludicrous to think it'll be Sammy. It takes not only skill and hard work, which Sammy definitely has, but luck. Luck in staying healthy. Luck in getting the right QB early on in your career (Rice caught passes from two Hall of Famers for the majority of his career). Luck in being in the right system.
"The jury is still out," is just as dumb as Dabo's original comment.

He did not say they were future NFL QB's. Dabo may get excited, but he isn't stupid or unrealistic. I have no doubt that our team was a MNC contender last season, until the FSU game, many pegged Clemson to be in the running for the title. If we would've had our #### together for 2 games, we would have been.

Which is most idiotic?
1) 5 strikes. 2) Being intoxicated and peeing on Main Street. 3) Being highly intoxicated on your coaches show. 4) Telling the world, "I LOVE C0CKS!!" 5) Pumping up your players in the public eye.
Note: It would be hard to have a wrong answer here. One option is far, far different than the rest and not really idiotic at all. See if you can figure it out. If you would like a higher sample size for hints, then let me know. You can do it Cockboy!

Dabo leans to the extreme more often than not. Now I think Sammy will be a great pro, but the Michael Jordon comparison is pushing things a bit. I suppose this came from the same side of Dabos head that told Kyle Parker he would be a 1st round pick if he came back for another year.

It said he could make a roster and beat out some QB's (doesn't mention starting).
But even granting that, this is some dude's list of the ranking of starting QB's that year:
http://bleacherreport.com/articles/417466-my-2010-nfl-qb-rankings
It's not some unbelievable reach to argue that the way Parker had played in the first season gave him a shot at beating some of the names on that list.

1. Please show me where he said that KP would be a first rounder, he said that he could make an NFL roster.
2. If you remember anything about the 2009 and first 3 games of 2010 (before he was playing injured), he did look like he had the potential to play in the NFL.

He didn't just say that.
"You turn on the TV and watch any NFL football, there's some bad quarterbacks in that league," Swinney said. "Some bad ones.
They'd have a hard time beating out Kyle Parker right here right now."
"He could make a 53-man roster," the Clemson head football coach said, "this summer."
This was after ONE season as the starter at Clemson.

I never said he said he was a first rounder, but he didn't just say he could make an NFL roster either which would have been fine.
He had to go overboard and say that a lot of QB's that you see playing on Sunday would have a hard time beating out KP who at the time had ONE year of experience as a starter.

The concept of passing Jordan up in the NBA draft is often used as an example of passing up an extraordinary and game-changing talent in the draft. This is simply Dabo saying he believe Sammy has the potential to be a game-changing talent in the NFL. God for him believing in his players.
And moreover, this is EXACTLY what a player wants his coach to say about him. Players love when a coach backs them up and speaks highly of them. I just truly see no issue at all with what he said.

You , Skeeter , may not make the comparison , but Dabo can . And Dabo did . Why do you care so much about a coach simply supporting one of his players who is already recognized as one of the best college receivers OF All Time ?

it's typical. I also get jittery about his coming out with grandiose statements about current players. Most recently, he came out with a big interview saying DeSean Watson is among the greatest freshmen ever, yada, yada. He may well be, but the coach should not be stating these things until the player has played a year. Especially young, unproven players. it's too easy to go to their heads when he does this.
See also: similar early statements about Sammy, including his character. Next thing, he struggles his entire junior year for various reasons.

I'm sure Dabo didn't literately mean that Sammy is going to be the greatest ever player in the pros (like MJ).
BUT, he WILL be a great player, an Impact Player and if a team passes over him, they are going to regret it. That's the point of the comment.
Oh and Tom Brady was the #199th pick in the draft, and 6 Qb's were drafted ahead of him. I'm sure that all of those teams regret that as well...

why any, "Clemson Fan" (51% pulse) would say anything to the contrary. Who's to say he won't be? Since you brought up MJ, did anyone think he'd be one of the top 10 (not best IMO) players in the history of basketball coming out of UNC? I believe it to be an, "outrageous statement" to say he won't be, considering he hasn't played a snap in the NFL yet. Is anyone picking him to be an absolute bust? How many times did we hear Sammy was NFL ready as a freshman? He may very well not be anywhere near the MJ of the NFL, but why is it ridiculous to believe he has the potential to be?

That 51% pulse means I'm a realist.
I just don't understand why the guy has to go to the extreme with everything. Not only does he sound nuts, he put tremendous pressure on people. Kyle Parker went from being better than half the NFL starters to being booed at Death Valley during the SC game. How embarrassing is that?
A couple weeks ago he said Tajh Boyd was a franchise changing QB when it's not even a guarantee he's gonna get drafted.
