I often think of the heavens your hands have made, and of the moon and stars you put in place. Then I ask, “Why do you care about us humans? Why are you concerned for us weaklings?”You made us a little lower than you yourself, and you have crowned us with glory and honor. - Psalm 8:3-5 http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Psalm8:3-5&version=CEV

"12 What shall I render unto the LORD for all his benefits toward me?

13 I will take the cup of salvation, and call upon the name of the LORD."

I had memorized the 23rd Psalm sometime...

before I was 10 yrs/o. After the children's mother had decided I was no longer essential to her life I spent a couple years living like a hermit on what's called a mountain on the west side of the Tennessee Valley. It was a family place which was a refuge for my sister and children after she lost her husband and became a type of refuge for me.

I lay in bed at night before the relief of sleep and remember the verses of Psa 23 but wasn't really sure if I got them in order. I tried them in what seemed like many different orders and can't remember now how long it took me to arrange them correctly in my mind.

Over the years I have memorized a lot of scripture and though it gets lost in a cluttered mind it always seems to surface when I seek comfort. My only comparative passage to Psa 23 is the beginning of the 14th chapter of the Gospel of John.

Psa 23 begins...'The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.' During those dark mountain nights I consider the role of the shepherd. A shepherd was a fearless being dedicated to protecting and providing for his flock and preferring his sheep over himself. He often risk his life by fighting wolves and other predators to protect his flock.

The most foolish, inaccurate and nonsensical fable of all time is the boy who cried wolf. A shepherd didn't cry wolf except maybe to warn his sheep. The shepherd fought wolves. The shepherd spoke and the sheep gather to him and he 'compassed,' them 'round about,' with a rod of wood which which he used to kill wolves if they were hungry enough or foolish enough to get near his flock.

He would use his staff which had a curve at the top to fetch a tangled lamb or to lift it off its front feet and turn him headlong toward the center of the flock or toward the sheepfold.

'The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want...thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.''

If I ever heard that sermon preached it never meant as much to me as it did on those nights alone on the mountain.

A good staff is a great tool/weapon. The might of God has saved me from the wolves on numerous occasions.
