Our state of S.C.

11

Feb 7, 2023, 7:48 PM

Has produced some unbelievable athletes and men over the years. One in particular I always admired was Anderson’s own Jim Rice. Jim chose to pursue baseball rather than play football at Clemson. Nevertheless, I was a big fan of his from the very beginning. When he became a Red Sox I was over joyed. It would take a long time to recognize his baseball feats with Boston.

Amazingly one particular incident I will always remember about Jim goes much further than baseball. In 1982 ( I think)
A very young boy sitting with his dad near the dugout was struck with a line drive. Jim raced into the stands and grabbed this young boy and immediately raced him to the medical crew in Fenway. That is something that a real Clemson man would do AND Jim came very close to being one.

I’ve often hoped that Jim would be a guest of Clemson and be recognized for his feats on and off the field. I’m not sure where he lives now but some of you may know.

Jim Ed had a quick bat. Absolutely could crush it.

I pitched for Wade Hampton against Hannah, Jim Rice pitched for Hannah and we brat them 1-0. Rice went 0-3 against me even though the last at bat he hit a fly ball that our CF caught about 410 feet away. My one moment to remember.

I had a Coach Tonnsend for my PE class back in Elementary School, he used to give out baseball cards.

I bet that was him. He lived behind me and was about 4 or 5

years older than me. I learned to play basketball and football with Dennis and his buddies. Dennis's dad would hit fungoes to him every, EVERY day. I think he played 3rd base for Wade Hampton. Wade Hampton had a fullback that went to Georgia and a tailback(halfback then) that went to Clemson. When I got there a few years later we had a guy named,Clyde Mayes, who went on to play for Furman and the Milwaulkee Bucks.

He also paid all his medical bills. I’ll never forget the picture of him carrying this little boy with blood all over his jersey.

I remember that as well. I bet it’s online somewhere because it was such a touching moment.

You left out Shoeless Joe.

And don’t forget the most incredible story of all, Lou Brissie.
Sort of amazing no movie’s been made about that guy.

The last I heard, Jim still lived in the Boston area but owned a home in Anderson as well. He worked for the Red Sox for several years.
