Just rewatched Clemson - Syracuse, and something stood out.

In fact, I thought I'd noticed it in previous games, but was able to confirm during the rewatch.

Almost every downfield pass DJ throws is challenged, and by that I mean that when the ball arrives to the receiver, the receiver is absolutely covered up, and the DB is draped over him or making contact when or before the ball arrives. This could be the result of a few things, I think, and I am not smart enough to know which it is. 1.Our WRs can't get any separation. This could be due to poor effort, poor route running, or poorly designed plays, I suppose, I don't know. Or, it could be 2.Our WRs get separation, but by the time DJ gets the ball to them, the DBs have closed in. This could be because DJ is slow to make the read, he's making the wrong read, or again poor routes. Either way, the timing just seems to be consistently off.

I guess I don't know enough about football to figure it out, but it drives me nuts to see a team like Syracuse, with much less talent at QB and WR, consistently get receivers open against our Brent Venebles defense. Their QB struggled with accuracy at times and made some bad throws, but he had guys open, while it seems we NEVER had guys open downfield, at least when the ball arrived. Any ideas what's up with that? I know our WR's are physically talented enough.

he may not be getting the ball out quick enough. Guys may not come back to the ball. Teams learn his progressions. But I do agree it is hard to see almost every one of our passes challenged and us just forget to even cover guys at times with a good D.

HOW ABOUT LOUSY FOOTWORK, NOT ABLE TO LOOK OFF RECEIVER, TELEGRAPHING THE THROW, NOT FOLLOWING PROGRESSION, NOT TAKING A CHANCE WITH HIS GREAT ARM ON LONG PASSES TO DRAW FOULS, THROWING 90 MPH TO RECEIVERS WITHIN 5 YARDS OF SCRIMMAGE, POOR BALL HANDLING AND LACK OF DECEPTION, FAILURE TO MAKE SIMPLE RUNNING READS... WANT MORE. OH, LITTLE OR NO TOUCH... AND WHY CAN'T HE HOOK UP WITH HIS OLD HS BUDDY BEAUX COLLINS...A REAL MYSTERY.

I'll take #2 ST. DJU stares down his receiver, next he pump fakes to that receiver (it looks cool), then he throws to said receiver. Meanwhile, cover man and one or both safeties are sprinting for the strip, tackle or pickoff.

Rinse and repeat.

It's not a pump fake. He's double clutching. He stops and hesitates to pull the trigger. Then tries to rifle it in late.

For bonus points watch some of the plays were he stares down #1 read WR. Pay attention to the other side of the field and you'll see the far side receivers and DB's all just stop running and watch him.

He was better last year bc they'd called a play, and he just fired the ball within 2 seconds. His reads on RPO have been terrible. see 2020 vs BC 35 yd TD run.

IMO our WR's aren't getting open enough. Couldn't tell you if it's on the scheme or WR. Sometimes I feel like we run too many shallow routes but it's hard to see on camera most plays. I don't feel like it's on late balls from DJ. On deep routes with our athletes late balls should be even MORE open, not less (barring safety help). Even if DJ is slow some times he has a strong enough arm to make up for that slower decision making.

We've been screwed by no-calls despite clingy DB's but our WR's are usually decent about fighting through that. IDK it's just weird.

There were plenty of receivers open.
Sometimes they dropped the pass.
Heck I thought y’all wanted him to throw the 50/50 ball and let our guys go get it.
Geez come on man.
The pass to Ngata for the touchdown was great!
The one to Ross Great!
The one to Collins ( I think) longest play of the game. Dude go back and watch that… not many people make that throw and it was a bullet! Oh yeah how about the 5 wide opens drops!

Some drops, some open receivers, but they are covered up

a lot of the time when the ball gets there, way, way more than we have our opponnents WRs covered up.

Several times we would start moving the ball, penalties would kill it. If we stop some of these mistakes, we may be able to sustain drives.

I also agree our receivers are not open.

Big factor is teams can get pressure rushing 3 to 4 linemen leaving 7-8 guys defending the pass. Also see a lot of routes close to each other when you need to clear out areas for one on one opportunities.

I don’t know the answer to your question, but I completely agree with your assessment. It seems like our receivers are almost always covered up whereas our opponent’s wide receiver are wide open a lot. Very frustrating, very confusing.
The only reason we beat Syracuse is because their quarterback couldn’t hit the broadside of a barn.

Hunter Helms should have been playing weeks ago. Stetson Bennett and Georgia are undefeated because of a great defense and the threat of a competent QB....all the things Clemson would have with Helms at QB.

I believe sticking with DJ is strictly a business decision targeted at future recruiting and has little to do with winning games this season.

The QB is on the hook for millions of dollars to The Pepsi Bottling Group/Dr Pepper Snappel Group.

Thank you. The only other person that sees Hunter Helms should've been playing since the 2nd half of the NC State game. Taisun is NOT a guy. He's a INT machine. Look at his stats. Hunter Helms played really well in his quarter vs GT last year. Made TP look 3rd string with all his 3 & outs in a 70 to 7 game. Helms stats last year weren't bad either. Way better than TP's.

DJ is a bust fam, and last year was fools gold. All those 400 yd games were mostly yards after catch from 3 NFL players. The same poor accuracy was on display last year, but everyone ignored that bc ETN and Amari made amazing catches then took dump offs up field for 65 yds every time.

Just throw the ball and let the receiver have a shot at it. Stop with the NFL style of throwing the ball away when the DB looks too close. Dang the interceptions, full speed ahead!

Pretty much everyone including SC State knows it's #2. DJ is simply terrible when facing covered receivers. The reports from scrimmages in practice indicate when he isn't facing real game time he makes the throws... but it doesn't translate when an actual non-buddy defense is across the line of scrimmage.

The best improvement for Clemson is to sit DJ and put in any other quarter back.

on your point 2, which is to watch the best, Tom Brady. Sure enough, it's all about timing. He throws a ball before the receiver turns, and on the bottom end - basically us - we throw the ball after he turns.
Pretty simple. It's really just physics when you get down to it.

Agree, and that's a lack of 1) coaching 2) practice, which equals 3) poor execution in game situations.

Would like to see a pass chart for routes greater than 10 yards. Guess the majority would be to the sidelines for basic outs, back shoulder tosses and 50/50 balls. Coverage easier to place when middle field routes not a significant tendency.

Remember the play where Ross should have broken his tail one at the goal line? We was open for 15 yards and then get the high ball over the middle. It’s on both WRs and DJ. I’m guessing here that the WRs are annoyed and tired of not getting the ball on time or accurately and the effort is lacking because of this frustration. DJ is also flat footed, stares down and double clutches only to try to squeeze a ball in last second. Not a great combo we have working right now. If I were a coach (I’m obviously not) I would have a hard reset with the QBs and WRs. Try to start fresh and squash the bad blood and memories moving forward.
