This is not just a Baltimore problem. It's an SC problem too. Just worked on a case where a person died in November of last year. They issued the death certificate in December, in a decent timeframe, couple of weeks. They had the funeral, but the insurance carrier is still waiting on the autopsy report and coroner's report. Years back, NORMALLY, if a cause of death was not obvious, the coroner would wait for the autopsy or toxicology tests, etc. to sign off on the death certificate. But now they're issuing death certificates with toxicology and autopsies still pending, and that means they can bury the person, but insurance benefits can not be paid in many cases for several months after the death certificate is issued.

Maybe you will go first and you won't have to worry about it? Be positive!

Waiting on insurance like the lady I spoke with last Friday. But nothing for most people to worry about.

As of this year, the average Medical Examiner salary is about $113K. It's a wonder anyone performs this function. The return on investment for a college degree, MD or DO degree followed by a pathology residency and preferably also a fellowship in forensic pathology is abysmal.

Plus it's literally a dirty job.

It is interesting work to some degree. I spent a little time with Forensic Path in Med School and saw some pretty bizarre stuff, but again the pay is just not worth the investment in money and years spent in training.

This problem doesn't matter for the deceased. Dead is dead, but it IS a problem for the survivors mentally and financially.

There have been some delays before, but usually delays were due to SLED taking forever to do toxicology tests. If there was a delay in the past, it was usually toxicology. Now it's autopsies as well as toxicology tests. Coroners are behind issuing reports even when autopsies are done.

It's just a system that didn't work well, working much, much less well.
