I think that the Europeans take this them against the USA

a little too serious.

Happy for McIlroy, but have heard how this is good for the Europeans about a dozen times.

Just do not get it. One, they are a whole continent against a country. Two, that is where golf started, they're supposed to be good at it.

I do not care that a non American wins the Open, just like I do not care if an American wins the British.

True, the rivalry of Euro vx. USA is played up a lot, but for the Europeans a lot of the tension is centered in one incident: That Ryder Cup where, as Justin Leonard holes a long putt, the other players and even their WIVES storm out onto the green in front of the European player, Olizabal, when Olizabal still has a putt to try and make. For golf purists -- and the Euro contingent are purists at heart -- this was the ultimate slap in the face. For years now that incident has motivated them to kick our butts in Ryder Cup and in majors. You just don't do that -- running out on the green before your opponent has finished playing the hole.

Bottom line: the guys from the other side of the pond are deserving; they're both talented and tenacious.

but that was like 98 or 99... I agree that was bad sportsmanship, but they have this world against the USA mentality that I just do not get.

Hooray for Rory. I am glad he won, but his nationality has nothing to do with it. I was pulling for him because I liked the way he handled himself after the Augusta meltdown. I thought it was pure class, and very mature for someone so young.
