Sometimes the road to the truth is so elusive it's confusing and reality becomes illusion.

70 years ago, in 1952, the Clemson Football program was in

upheaval in their 13th year under Coach Frank Howard. 13 turned out to be an unlucky number, as the Tigers were only able to procure a 2-6-1 record through a nine game regular season. NONE of those games were conference games, that is where the "upheaval" comes from. Clemson and Maryland had been put on year long suspension for participating in bowl games in violation of the SoCon bowl ban in 1951. So, Clemson and Maryland finished in a tie for last place in the conference in 1952, at 0-0-0.

Clemson would never be an active member of the Southern Conference again, leaving along with Duke, North Carolina, NC State, South Carolina, Maryland, and Wake Forest in June of 1953 to form the new Atlantic Coast Conference.

But, on to the strange 1952 season, where Clemson was still technically in the SoCon, even though they played no conference games.

The season opened on a hopeful note, as we once again smoked some Blue Hose, winning 53-13.

That was beyond a doubt the high point of the season. There would be many low points, but none lower than losing 6-0 to the Coots on Big Thursday. Tough knowing that a single touchdown would have changed the outcome of this game. Clemson now leads the series 29-18-3.

But, before that misery came a 28-0 road loss to No. 3 Maryland, and a flat out shellacking of 54-13 against the Florida Gators in the Swamp.

Clemson played Boston College again at old Braves Field, taking a 13-0 win as the only other bright spot of the season beyond the opener with Presbyterian. This was followed up the next week with an unsatisfying 12-12 tie with Fordham on the road.

Due to the SoCon ban, Clemson wound up having to play the last seven of their nine games on the road. The season ended with a very frustrating 3-0 loss to Auburn. Frustrating because ANY offense at all would have changed the outcome. All results below.

Presbyterian W 53–13
Villanova L 7–14
At No. 3 Maryland L 0–28
At Florida L 13–54
At South Carolina (Big Thursday, Columbia, SC) L 0–6 (Clemson leads series 29-18-3)
At Boston College (Old Braves Field) W 13–0
At Fordham T 12–12
At Kentucky L 14–27
At Auburn L 0–3

I think all Tigers were ready to say good riddance to this 13th season under Coach Howard.

It's been a long road, but it's well worth the wait.
