Sometimes the road to the truth is so elusive it's confusing and reality becomes illusion.

67 years ago, 1955 saw Clemson in an upswing in Coach Frank

Jun 30, 2022, 8:18 AM

Howards 16th year. We climbed to a third place finish in the ACC with a 3-1-0 conference mark, and a 7-3-0 overall winning record. The only ranked team in the conference was league Champion Maryland, at No.3. (4-0-0, 10-1-0).

For the 2nd straight year, the Tigers had the same score against Presbyterian in the opener, a 33-0 win.

Clemson would play two ranked teams during the season. This time, we didn't win ANY of those games.

On the strength of a 14-7 win over the Georgia Bulldogs in the Valley, we carried a three game winning streak, and a No.16 ranking, into our 4th game, a road tilt against old friend Coach Jess Neely and Rice. The Owls took a 21-7 win to end our season opening win streak.

Now unranked, as we would be for the rest of the season, we next stopped the Coots winning streak at four games on Big Thursday, taking a satisfying 28-14 win. Clemson now leads the series 30-20-3.

Two more wins followed, before we faced then No.2 Maryland in the Valley. The Terps throttled us 25-12. We would fare no better against No.12 Auburn on the road the next week, falling 21-0 on the Plains in Alabama.

The Tigers would bounce back to end the season with a 40-20 win over the Furman Paladins. All results below.

Presbyterian W 33–0
at Virginia W 20–7
Georgia W 14–7
At Rice L 7–21
At South Carolina (Big Thursday, Columbia, SC) W 28–14 (Clemson leads series 30-20-3.)
Wake Forest W 19–13
At VPI W 21–16
No. 2 Maryland L 12–25
At No. 12 Auburn L 0–21
At Furman W 40–20

Nowadays, a 7-3 record would get you a middling bowl bid. But, bowls were not nearly as plentiful in the mid 50's, so the Tigers had to stay home for the Holidays. In fact, there were only six total bowl games after the 1955 season, the four big ones, Rose, Sugar, Orange, and Cotton Bowls, and two others, the Gator and Sun Bowls. And, I guarantee, only a vast student of Bowl history, or an alumnus of the two schools, would ever guess who the winners of the Gator Bowl and Sun Bowl were that year.

Gator Bowl: Vanderbilt defeated No.8 Auburn 25-13.
Sun Bowl: Wyoming defeated Texas Tech 21-14.

National Champion was No.1 Oklahoma, who defeated No.3 Maryland 20-6 in the Orange Bowl.

In "Back to the Future Part II" football scores were broadcasted in Biff's car. The Maryland-Clemson game score can be heard among them.

with Coach Tatum being the big name. He died suddenly in 1959 b/4 a game with Clemson, I believe.
