And Happy Groundhog Day

Since it's cloudy and rainy, the groundhog shouldn't see it's shadow and winter shouldn't last much longer.
I liked the movie Groundhog Day, especially since it had Gaffney girl Andie McDowell in it. But I always wondered why it came out on the 4th or 5th of February back in 1993. Maybe bc the 2nd was a Tuesday, but they could have released it the weekend before, but then that would have been in January. Probably not that important in the grand scheme of things though.

214 years ago, in 1809, we did the Politics thing a little

different than we do now. President James Madison was sworn in as our 4th President. But, this did not happen until March 4th. And, while this would be Madison's first term as President, Vice President George Clinton was embarking on his SECOND term, having been elected independently to that office.
Congress also angered all the Ladies of the Evening initially in 1809, until they figured out that the recently passed Non-Intercourse Act of 1809 was actually replacing the unpopular Embargo Act of 1807, and had nothing directly to do with their profession.
Robert Fulton patented his steamboat, giving him a virtual monopoly on the commercial steamboat trade. A century or so later, these types of patents would be struck down in several major antitrust trials, such as the one that allowed Henry Ford to begin producing automobiles, after winning in court against an automobile monopoly.
Speaking of patents, on May 5, 1809, Mary Dixon Kies became the first recipient of a patent granted to a woman by the United States Patent and Trademark Office. She invented a technique of weaving straw with silk and thread. She used her invention mainly for the weaving of women's hats and bonnets.
Several famous people were born in the year 1809. Among them, Abraham Lincoln, Edgar Allen Poe, Cyrus McCormick, William B. Travis, and Oliver Wendell Holmes Sr, just to name a few.
Speaking of Lincoln, The Illinois Territory was also established in 1809. Honest Abe was actually already 21 years old when his family moved to Illinois in 1830 from Kentucky, where he was born.
