South Carolina Highway 187 is a 30.33 mile state highway that runs from SC 184 near Iva north to US 76 just south of Pendleton, adjacent to Lake Hartwell along the way and passing Pendleton High School near the northern end. Wasn't it called Wild Hog Road in the past?

Regrettably I've only been to 2 Clemson football away games in 50+ years of fandom, both wins. They were at Notre Dame in South Bend, Indiana in 1979 and at South Carolina in Cootlumbia in 1983. It was a long drive to northern Indiana in mid November with my bros and parents where it was a little cold, but not bad. We saw some of the city, the Notre Dame campus with the golden dome, the stadium and Touchdown Jesus, and later Lake Michigan and thought about Chicago, but decided against it. Going to the game the next day in orange, we were pointed at and snickered at, but after the 16-10 Tiger win, no Irish fans were laughing. It was sweet revenge for 2 years earlier.

187 - Steve Fuller's 187 Completed Passes Set a Clemson Record in 1978

What events led to Clemson’s 1980s resurgence? Ask Danny Ford what/whom he credits for Clemson’s ascendence and he will credit Clemson QB Steve Fuller (1975-1978). Ask Fuller, and he will go point specifically to the 1977 team that turned things around. According to the Post and Courier:

“At the time, Clemson wasn't very good until Steve Fuller got here," Ford said Dec. 11 [2019]. "Well, Clemson had been good - coach Howard had been to the Orange Bowl once, they'd been undefeated once, went to several bowl games. But Steve was so good, and he was so smart.”

The way Fuller sees it, the Tigers' buildup to a national title in 1981 didn't start that Gator Bowl year. It was the previous season, when they flipped a bad 1976 (3-6-2, 0-4-1 in the ACC) into a productive 1977 (8-3-1, 4-1-1, conference runner-up), which put the program back in a bowl game for the first time in 18 years, though the Tigers lost 34-3 in the 1977 Gator Bowl.

https://www.postandcourier.com/sports/fuller-helped-turn-around-clemson/article_a7c8a4f7-8bb2-524a-92bf-5e4628de4a48.html

At Clemson:

Fuller was special at Clemson! According to two articles on ClemsonTigers.com:
He started 27 consecutive games for Clemson. He was selected as a third-team All-American in 1978 and All-ACC in 1977 and 1978. He was honored with the ACC Player-of-the-Year Award both years, the only Tiger to win that award twice.

Along with his on-field success, Fuller had many academic achievements at Clemson. He is one of just three Tiger football players in history to be named an All-American on the field and in the classroom in the same year. In addition, he made the Academic All-ACC team three consecutive years, and in 1978, he was one of 11 scholar-athletes honored by the National Football Foundation Hall of Fame. He was awarded an NCAA postgraduate scholarship and was chosen recipient of one of the NCAA’s Top Five Awards. Fuller graduated with a 3.93 GPA.

https://clemsontigers.com/steve-fuller/

In that 1978 season Fuller threw 187 passes in 12 games. Last year, Boyd had thrown 187 passes by the seventh game. For his career, Fuller averaged just 12.9 passes per game compared to Boyd’s 29.8.

One record Fuller still holds is most selections as ACC Most Valuable Player. He won the award in 1977 and ‘78 when he took a program that had not been to a bowl game or ranked in the top 20 in 18 years to consecutive bowl games and consecutive top-20 rankings, including a then program best No. 6 final spot in ‘78.

Fuller is the only quarterback in Clemson history to be named an All-American on and off the field in the same season. He was sixth in the voting for the Heisman Trophy, tied with C.J. Spiller for the highest finish in the voting by a Tiger.

https://clemsontigers.com/the-legend-of-steve-fuller/

For his Clemson career, Fuller completed 268 of 511 passes (52.4%) for 5.078 yards and 22 touchdowns. He also rushed 505 times for 1665 yards and 21 more touchdowns.

https://www.sports-reference.com/cfb/players/steve-fuller-1.html

Many of remember well how Fuller’s final game ended. That 1978 team that finished 11-1 and ranked #6 in the country defeated Ohio State in the Gator Bowl. With Clemson clinging to a 7-15 lead in the closing minutes, Clemson’s Charlie Bauman intercepted OSU’s Art Schlichter to seal the Clemson win. After Bauman ran out of bounds to the OSU sideline, OSU Head Coach Woody Hayes was so angry that he punched Bauman! The game was Danny Ford’s first as a Head Coach. It was also Woody Hayes last.

After Clemson

The Kansas City Chiefs drafted Fuller with the 23rd pick of the 1979 NFL Draft. He played four seasons with Kansas City (1979-1982). With KC, he completed 465 of 817 passes (56.9%) for 5,333 yards and 22 touchdowns.

He then played three seasons for the Chicago Bears (1984-1986). With the Bears, he completed 140 of 249 passes (56.2%) for 1823 yards and 6 more touchdowns.

https://www.sports-reference.com/cfb/players/steve-fuller-1.html

While with the Bears he and several teammates recorded the “Super Bowl Shuffle” on their way to winning the 1985 Super Bowl. Some people still consider the 85 Bears among the greatest teams of all time! According to the Independent Mail the “Super Bowl Shuffle” sold ore then 500 copies:

Steve Fuller is the only Clemson quarterback to garner All-America honors, have his jersey and number retired and then proceed to the National Football League to earn a Super Bowl ring and perform on a certified gold record.

https://www.independentmail.com/story/sports/college/clemson/2019/02/18/former-clemson-quarterback-steve-fuller-enters-south-carolina-football-hall-fame/2905198002/

Although Fuller’s #4 jersey had long been retired at Clemson, he agreed to bring the number out of retirement to allow Deshaun Watson to wear it with a patch on the shoulder. The patch (apparently, Dabo’s idea) recognized Fuller by name.

As of 2019, Fuller now serves as an offensive coordinator at Hilton Head High School.

187 - Trenton Simpson Made 187 Tackles for Clemson

LB Trenton Simpson originally committed to Auburn, but he still waited for an offer from his Dream School. A highly rated (five-star) LB recruit out of Charlotte, his Dream School, Clemson, just wasn’t sure if it would have room for him in its 2020 LB recruiting. And Dabo will not offer a scholarship unless the staff is certain that it is a committable offer. As his senior season went on, Simpson even told his mom that he had lost faith in dreaming.

But, in December 2019, that offer he wanted from his Dream School finally came. Simpson didn’t hesitate!

When Simpson was a freshman in 2020, Sports Illustrated wrote:

For freshman linebacker Trenton Simpson, a lifelong dream has now become a reality.

The freshman linebacker spent most of last year waiting on a Clemson offer. When it finally came in mid-December, Simpson wasted no time and committed on the spot.

"A dream come true, and I'm still living my dream," Simpson said after Clemson's win over The Citadel. "You know, I waited. I mean, this is where I wanted to be, so I just had to wait for when my opportunity came and make sure I committed. Now I'm just living my dream."

https://www.si.com/college/clemson/football/clemson-linebacker-trenton-simpson-living-out-lifelong-dream

While at Clemson, Simpson was credited with the following stats in 1,443 snaps over 37 games (27 starts):
- Credited with 187 tackles (22.5 for loss)
- 12.5 sacks
- Six pass breakups
- Three forced fumbles
- Two-time Academic All-ACC Team selection.

https://clemsontigers.com/sports/football/roster/trenton-simpson/

By year:

2020:
- 28 tackles (17 solo, 11 assisted)

2021:
- 65 tackles (42 solo, 23 assisted)

2022:
- 72 tackles (41 solo, 31 assisted)

https://www.sports-reference.com/cfb/players/trenton-simpson-1.html

After Clemson:

The Baltimore Ravens selected Simpson with the 86th pick of the 2023 NFL Draft. As a rookie, he recorded 13 tackles (10 solo and 3 assisted) with the Ravens this past season.

44-16 it was the best SEC team ever according to the media going into the game, they got Tigerized!
