On an individual level? Of course. But if every Wendy's employee went on strike, they'd have some leverage.
Similarly, the players have a great deal of bargaining power in the NFL labor issue. Without the players, the owners are losing millions of dollars.

I don't think either side gives a #### whether you feel sorry for them and no one is talking about a career choice. These people have a business that makes a certain amount of money and it has to be divided up. In this situation no one can be technically overpaid. Splitting of "real" revenue not being asked to be paid what doesn't exist. They are negotiating as they should. As in most cases neither side should be 100% happy but equally sad. Both are just trying to protect themselves and in most cases both start with unreasonable demands and meet in the middle. If you don't understand then just shut up and be patient. I don't care about either side but I understand, just hurry up and entertain me. That is their job and how they exist in my life. Not the freakin end of the world.

I'm sure its that simple. Tell the billionaires to stop trying to pull a fast one. Better yet, how about WE both #### since neither of us know whats really going on. And the money is all relative so they need to make sure they don't sign a bad deal. Your LIFE will be ok without it for a little while. I hate this time as well but give me a break you friggin cry babies tellin them to just sign a deal. Really? Remember that the next time there is a big decision to be made in YOUR world when you are purchasing a house or something. Why don't you just shut up and sign it and see where that might leave you. By the way, its certainly about money but about many other things as well.

Have you seen former NFL players in their late 50's? Many of them can barely move and are on their last legs. Considering most players make far less than you believe, I think it's best to quit your whining.
I too am gladly awaiting the season but to act like NFL players are overpaid, is stupid. Considering the physical toll on their body, the amount of hours players put into their jobs, and the amount of money the league makes, I'd have to say I consider NFL players to be among the most underpaid athletes.

Why are they overpaid? Because they get paid more than you to play a game?
The reality is that NFL, MLB, and NBA players have very unique talents. Their athletic skills are coveted by most of the population and they provide one of the most successful sources of entertainment. Players work extremely hard to maintain their level of performance (we're talking 40+ hour work weeks) and risk their physical health in the process.
Why are the overpaid again? I do not see how an athlete is any different than a musician, actor, comedian, or other type of entertainer.

So they are free to bargain for more money, correct? Just because you make 5 million doesn't mean you are underpaid. The CEO of Exxon would be vastly underpaid if he only made 5 million a year. Similarly, the best players in a league that nets hundreds of billions of dollars could be underpaid if they make 5 million a year.

but thats the market these days...just like college coaches.
Guys that are 50 years old now should have a legitimate gripe and the NFL should help them out.
When Peyton Manning, Ray Lewis, or any player that makes several hundred grand a year turn 50, they shouldn't really have a gripe because the league pays them a whole lot more now than they used to pay guys.
The league gives them the opportunity to self-insure...if they don't..then they are SOL. League minimum is $350,000...$350,000..I'll say it again....$350,000!!
Thats a lot of money for a 22 year old kid to earn. Just a little bit better than the average college grad. Say he only plays for 4 years...thats $1.4 mill in salary pay by the time he is 26 years old. Take half away for tax..still $700,000. or $175,000. I'd take that for my first 4 years out of school...how bout you?
They should teach these 'kids' to live on less than they make and store up for the future.
The NFL does make a lot of money and I can understand the argument that they are underpaid based on that, but the owners, own the business. Its their business, they have to manage and run it. The players lift weights and play the game. Some might do appearances (for pay) or other odds and ends.
Lets not act like the players got some screw job on all this. They are employees who are VERY well compensated and basically get set for life. Even if they only play for a 1 year or 2 in the NFL, they can interview for many, many jobs and probably get them because of their association.
Thats my rant..I used to be more sympathetic to the players, but not as much now.

I know that's not the majority of the players, but if you're a walk-on and making little to submit your body to that kind of punishment, you have to start thinking about a career move. Or you can tough it out and get full retirement in 13 years of the league. I'm sorry, but I'm of the camp that if they don't like it, they don't have to do it. Or, they could pool their money/equity into a new league or something. If Michael Vick and others decided to suit up and a different team of all stars play in the same stadium every Sat. you don't the ESPN wouldn't buy the rights? Maybe they need to get creative if they don't like the owners. It's a free country with free markets. Go start your own league where the players own equity in teams and get a higher share of the profits.

Players are not entitled to play football in the NFL, fans are not entitled to watch football -- but owners ARE entitled to THEIR investment. If the players don't like how things are done, get the F**k out!
A few things to point out though. So far, this has been a LOCKOUT, meaning the owners chose to lock out the players. Now that the owners have made an agreement (amongst themselves), if the players turn it down and do not ratify, this will become a PLAYER STRIKE.
To summarize: Owners are entitled to their principal investment. Until now this has been a LOCKOUT. If players turn down deal and do not ratify, lockout will turn into a PLAYER STRIKE.

Don't argue simply to argue, it makes you look silly.
The players are paid far more than 1% of total revenues, but in no way should make nearly as much as the owners.
If you put replacement players on the field and paid them 1/10 of what current NFL players make, the stadiums will still sell out, jerseys will still be sold, and the Super Bowl will still rock.

Agree 100%. They have no bargaining power at the end of the day. They think they do, but they don't. Any increase will just be out of goodwill of the owners.
If they really want to share the profits, they should negotiate an equity stake in the team ownership. That's the way business works. Get used to it or move to Russia.

Owners are not entitled to their principle investment. If they want a guarantee on their money, they should stuff it in mayonnaise jars and bury it in the back yard.
An investment involves risk. Part of the risk is that the employees who actually produce the product will demand higher wages. Comes with the territory. So no, owners aren't entitled to anything. But neither are the players.
Bottom line: I really don't care what happens to the NFL. Because to me college football in general and Clemson football in particular are the only football that really matters.

I can understand the arguments of both sides and I get what the players are saying, but they are millionaires at the very least make $300k or so.
These guys should realize how much they have been given (which is less than it looks bc of high taxes) and live on less than they make for a few years. They will end their career with a butt load of money to build on. They will also have a lot of money to self-insure themselves and not have to worry about their benefits when they are 50.
Seasoned veterans like Peyton M and Ray Lewis have no right to ##### about any of it. I know they are 'fighting for the future', but they have enough money now that the NFL shouldn't owe them anything in the future other than a Hall of Fame intro and free tickets.
I know there are more details, but thats my take.
