At first that seems crazy, but it makes some sense when you think about it.

Expectations are incredibly low. If you have just a little success there, with his success at Clemson, he could really set himself up similar to Spurrier.

The ACC Coastal is no juggernaut. Staff changes at VT and Mack retiring soon at UNC. If Tony could go 7-5, he could have his choice as a lifer at Duke or could get a really good job with valuable head coaching experience.

Duke makes USuC look like paradise. Duke is the dead end of all dead end jobs. No money no fan support no facilities.

Cutcliff actually made over $3 million a year. They also have newer better facilities because of Cuttcliff. Its a lot better job after he got there. See here:

Who knows what Elliott is thinking? Certainly, not me. He could be thinking:

1. I'm staying here until a much bigger job comes open.
2. I'm going to go the Napier route and get a job at a solid G5 program, like Louisiana.
3. Duke is intriguing. I'm familiar with the area. Could be a good stepping stool. Get them bowl eligible for a few years, don't have to win the ACC, to be successful.

He had the worst offense in the ACC despite having the best players in the ACC. I realize its not entirely his fault but how that makes somebody like Duke think he can succeed with a bunch of two and three star recruits is beyond me.
