Brent Venables vs Todd Monken..

Who?
Todd Monken is the UGA offensive coordinator…
It seems like his most defining attribute is not staying anywhere for long ….

UGA has the talent to beat anyone…but..

Brent Venables with a whole off season to prepare (whilst chewing on a painful loss) versus Todd Who??

Honestly I tried to get a read on what to expect from Monken and all I saw is that he doesn’t stick anywhere and apparently whined to opposing coaches while with the Browns…

I like this strategic match-up.. a lot…..

Hopefully we get the play in and have the defense set before they snap the ball.

OSU exposed us and caught us unready too many times.

Venables saw the same thing we did …
And he gets paid $2.5 million a year to fix it…

I hope Monken’s game plan is to try and copy Ryan Day…

I think Ryan Day is a great offensive mind by the way (probably a jerk too but that’s irrelevant) ….Monken isn’t (well he might be a jerk at least based on how he handled his time with the Browns)..

Monken does run a fast pace at times, but only situationally. It's not a core principal of his like it is for a Josh Heupel.

Monken will try to take advantage of a quick snap on a play after hitting a bomb or something like that, but he doesn't continually push the pace.

Here's a summary for you:

- Cut his teeth as a WR coach coming up through the ranks in college at Ok St and LSU and then in the NFL with the Jags.

- His first major crack at Offensive Coordinator came with Ok St in 2011 and 2012. During his time there calling plays, the team set school season records for total offensive yards, passing yards, completion percentage, points scored and passing touchdowns.

- Was offered the HC job at Southern Miss after former coot Ellis Johnson ran the program into the ground with a 0-12 record in 2012. Monken was able to transform the team's offense to the tune of being only the second BCS team ever to have a 4000 yd passer and two 1000 yd rushers in the same season.

- His success at Southern Miss got him an offer to be back in the NFL as the Offensive Coordinator of the Tampa Bay Bucs. The Buccaneers set numerous club records including total yards, passing yards and passing touchdowns.

- Monken moved on to the Cleveland Browns after Dirk Koetter was released, and had a season to forget as HC Freddie Kitchens ran a sinking ship in his one year stint as the top guy.

TL;DR - Monken is a pass first coordinator who has successfully worked his way up the coaching ladder until a bump in the road at his last NFL stop.

Pretty sure socomfort doesn’t claim to be a Tiger…

Thanks for the summary though…

I found all the same..but to me - he’s never had stability anywhere and one could argue he’s benefited from personnel more than anything when he’s had success…

Strikes me as a guy that moves on when he doesn’t see the personnel…

I’m biased though…Clemson fan …

As are you - whatever SEC team you affiliate with…..

You're right. Never claimed to be anything but a Dawg fan.

I guess I see it from a different lens. College coaching is a transitory existence. It truly is the norm to be at a place for a few seasons only to move on when a "promotion" comes your way.

college WR coach --> NFL WR coach --> college OC --> NFL OC

That's really just following the normal upward career trajectory that good coaches can expect.

A guy like Venables who puts roots down in just one or two places is the exception and not the rule.

Just to flesh out my point on personnel…

He caught the all time career passing yardage leader at Southern Miss and the 2nd in career passing yardage at Oklahoma State during his stops there …

I guess if I was a UGA fan I’d be saying it was Monken’s magic touch that made them what they were….

I’ve been sitting in your spot as a Clemson fan - where we all sit around and tell ourselves what a great hire - Rob Spence is …or whoever the latest OC is..
No fan ever thinks a hire isn’t a great one…

Counterpoints:

[br]OK ST:[/br]

Brandon Weeden is the QB from OK St that is the #2 on their all time list. He became a 1st round draft pick, but quickly flamed out and was released by the team that drafted him after his second year. Was a jouneyman for a couple of years after that, but that's beside the point. Monken only caught him for one of the two years he called plays there. The second year he had a QB by committee with 3 guys all getting over 130 attempts. Here's what the breakdown looked like:

2011 - Weeden - 4727 yards; 8.4 ypa; 37 TDs
2012 - 3 QB combo - 4312 yards; 8.7 ypa; 34 TDs

So, there was very little drop-off from the QB spot from 2011 to 2012 even with using three different QBs, two of which were freshman. The stats just don't back up the assertion that he got lucky with a good QB.

Southern Miss

Mullens was actually committed to UAB before switching to Southern Miss on signing day due to Monken's recruiting of him. Here's what Mullens said about Monken after he left:

"He did a lot for this program," said Mullens, via the Biloxi Sun-Herald. "He recruited me, he developed me, he made me the quarterback I am today. He made Southern Miss come back. He was the leader. He deserves all the credit for that."

We could argue all day long about who made who, but it's obvious that both men respect the heck out of each other. That's good enough for me.

Well, the real question is whether Kirby Smart will let him do his job or like Muschamp will he puts the brakes on aggressive play calling, especially in the passing game. Is Kirby still the same coach that preferred Fromm over Fields? Can Kirby see the light like his old boss, Saban? He says all the right things, but in the heat of a game is he going conservative? I'll believe it when I see it.

Lot's of folks have that same concern.

The way I see it is from Monken's point of view. His one year as OC at Cleveland was a mess due to his dysfunctional his relationship with the HC Freddie Kitchens. I have a strong feeling that Monken wouldn't have even considered the UGA job if he felt like he wouldn't have full control.

Only time will tell, but there was a decisive shift in play calling last year, and even more so after JT Daniels took the reigns.

Okay now that you’ve done all you can to promote your OC let me take a crack at it. His Best years were from 2011-2015 just about the same time frame as Chad Morris. Would anyone raise their hand and hire Chad Morris today? NO! Also a record setting OC. He was great for the time but DC have caught on to his game. Monken may very well still be a great OC but he’s got to prove it in this new “era” if you will. Offense has morphed drastically in so much as 5 years. We’ll see what he’s got this year with a “top 5” QB and talent to work with. I for one am not going to use his time at OK ST and So Miss as reasons why he’ll light it up at UGA. I’ll believe it it when I see it from UGA.

He did lead the NFL in passing yards and tied for 3rd in passing TDs in 2018 with Tampa Bay too. I'd say that was a good year considering his QBs were Jameis Winston and Ryan Fitzpatrick.

I think the overall point though is that Monken seems to be transitioning UGA's more traditional 3 yards and a cloud of dust offense to a more modern pass oriented scheme. Case in point, here are the percentages of total yards gained by passing for UGA since Kirby Smart took over:

2016 - 50.3%
2017 - 40.6%
2018 - 48.6%
2019 - 54.6%
2020 - 58.9%

So, just off the bat it's plainly evident that Monken threw the ball more in 2020 than any of Kirby's previous years OCs. But it's even more evident if you look at only the games with JT Daniels at the helm. As you can see below, once a better overall QB took over the percentage of passing yards increased even more. I think one can reasonably expect this trend to continue because of two major factors. First, this will be Monken's first full offseason to work with the team. Remember he came on board and was immediately handicapped by the cancellation of spring practice and summer workouts due to COVID restrictions. Second, he actually has a settled QB1 this season rather than the three guys he had to work through before JT was ready to play.

2020 w/ JT Daniels - 63.9%
2020 w/ Other QBs - 54.7%

For context:

2020 Clemson - 69.4%
2020 Alabama - 66.1%
2020 Oklahoma - 63.7%
2020 Notre Dame - 52.9%
2020 Ohio State - 50.5%

2018 Tampa Bay - 77.1%
2017 Tampa Bay - 75.1%
2016 Tampa Bay - 70.1%

Feel free to put all your faith in Monken but I am still going wait to believe it when I see it. Not saying it’s not going to happen because y’all could turn into LSU of 2019. We shall see on September 4th.

Yeah, I don't think anyone is truly expecting LSU '19 or Bama '20 numbers out of the UGA offense. At least no one who is serious. That would be kinda absurd. First off, JT Daniels is no Joe Burrow, and second there isn't really a comparison to those WR rooms either.

I'd just be happy with an offense that doesn't end up being the equivalent of a battering ram into an 8-man box all game long. Establish the pass, make the defense have to worry about defending the whole field, and then run into a lighter box when it's more advantageous. That's all I want. Doesn't have to be video game numbers, just more of a pass to open the run mentality than a run to open the pass type game plan.

That's where I think UGA is headed, and I'm good with it.

that going form a college OC to a college HC to an NFL OC and then back to a college OC would be considered a step backwards and certainly not consistent with the upward trajectory you previously mentioned. Maybe that's just me.

Yep, I don't disagree there.

Both sides have good coaches that will put their guys in positions to make plays both offensively and defensively. It will come down to the which Jimmys and Joes are able to execute those plays (i.e. make the tackle in space and set the edge in the run game, or make the other guy miss and fight for that 50/50 ball).

What’s to be gained by demeaning the oppositions’ coaches. Just assume they’re good and looking at your flaws as hard as you’re searching for theirs. And to assume Kirby or any GA coach will do exactly what they’ve previously done is lunacy. They want to win big. They’re looking for an edge too. So in an early game the edge often goes to the party with the most starting stability. That won’t guarantee them a win but you can bet that their heads are in it.
