The Battle of Camden - Reader's Digest Version

1) The British capture Benjamin Lincoln's 5000-man army in Charleston and occupy S.C.
2) Washington sends the hero of the Battle of Saratoga, Horatio Gates, to recapture S.C.
3) Gates turns out to be a political, not a military hero. (Benedict Arnold, Gates' second-in-command, actually won Saratoga. But Arnold never got the recognition he wanted, and we know where that led.)
4) Gates is crushed when literally half his army runs away at the first shot of battle. Lousy NC and Va militia!
5) Gates remaining troops, continentals from Md and De, put up a valiant fight but are overwhelmed.

And where were the SC Continental troops at the battle of Camden, SC, you might ask? Mostly in prison, captured by the British at Charleston the year before.
