I like him but after following Ettiene, the greatest rb we’ve had, I see him as a 4 year guy.

ETN was the 2nd best back. A close 2nd, but still second.

now, reading it again... it's still hard to read. "clemson's RB working for offense's good..." is just painful to even try to say.

This article sums up the problem with our current on-field

Leadership. I don’t ever remember any of our true player leaders in the past talking about being leaders, because if you’re a true leader, you don’t have to say it out loud, it’s understood. Do you think Etienne, or Watson, or Wilkins told everyone “hey guys, I’m the leader in the room.”?

We have more kids on this team declaring themselves leaders because it’s like they think it’s what they’re supposed to say. Maybe it’s just a generational thing, but it’s weird. Generally people rally around a real leader, and despise the phony who tells everyone they’re the leader.

“I believe that I set the standard for our running back room above what is expected from everybody else,” Shipley said. “So, if you think that you’re giving just enough to be above that standard -- I’m asking for 10 times more than that, and I wouldn’t ask for that if I wasn’t. Holding myself to that as well.”

Re: This article sums up the problem with our current on-field

I completely agree. You would not see Wilkins or Boulware (our best leaders this decade IMO - Etienne was one of our two greatest RBs ever, but not really a leader) saying "I'm the leader here. I'm pretty hardcore." I think Shipley is a great athlete and plays with a huge amount of heart and intensity to compensate for some of his downsides. And I think if his intensity rubs off on others and makes them play harder, or if he tries to push his teammates to a higher standard, that's phenomenal.

But this isn't something an actual leader would say. I haven't heard any of the players describe him as a leader, just that he plays hard and is extremely competitive. It seems like the media kind of asks him about his experiences as a leader, and he just wings it.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

You see Klubnik doing it too.

Every other interview is "I'm going to be a real leader" this and "I've been working on being a better leader" that.

It reminds me of Kelly Bryant. He was so uncomfortable and unnatural at the leadership role, but they'd beaten it in his head that was what he was supposed to be, so when he finally got the start he was all over the place looking like a guy cosplaying what he thought QB leaders were supposed to do.

At best, Shipley's comment would get a giant eye roll from the rest of the RB's, and at worst, a big mental FU and some real resentment.

Rat poison. Dabo and many players interviewed preseason spoke about the potential greatness of this team, how hard they worked, how many leaders the team had, and the sincere love they had for each other. Then Duke got some breaks and kicked Tiger fannies. So how do they respond next week vs. FSU?

He didn't see say it very well but I think I understand and agree with where he is coming from. You aren't going to always be your best in every game so if you can limit your mistakes when things aren't going well, so that bad doesn't turn into awful, you can minimize the worst outcomes.

A lot of teams fold under pressure when they have a bad day and that can snowball into an extended period of time before they come out of the funk. This is the psychology of losing streaks and the idea is not to let those become any longer than they have to be. Losing streaks are always part of the game but like anything else, they can be managed to provide the least amount of disruption, if handled properly. The proper attitude when encountering adversity has a lot to do with the recovery time it takes to return to peak performance.

I think that comment reflects a statement that Dabo made regarding turnovers... to paraphrase, he said that while the goal is to eliminate turnovers, they must at least have fewer than their opponent. Aka...our bad must be better than their bad.

I’m fairly educated (probably more than most), and I had to read that title 4 times to figure out what was being said. I asked ChatGPT to rewrite it…

Certainly, here’s a rewritten article title:

“Clemson Running Back Strives for Offensive Excellence, Aims to Avoid Mediocrity”

You're more educated than most, and it took ChatGPT

It sounds like he and his coaches are striving for the really bad things to just be less bad.
