You know what Islamic terrorists learned from 9/11?

Jun 13, 2016, 11:38 AM

That they could control our reaction to attacks in the US if they just were more careful in choosing targets. They get an ISIS connected US citizen, they send him on the mission with an Assault rifle, and they send him into a gay club to commit the attack.

And our politicians are so quick to jump on the opportunity to help their poll numbers using the tragedy they immediately begin politicizing it in a way that prevents any rational discussion of the issues involved.

I'd be willing to bet that the first thought of a significant portion of the population after an instant, "Oh no. that's horrible" was, "OH Great the liberals/conservatives are going to try and use this to take our guns/start more wars"

The people eat it up and less than twenty years post 9/11, we've gone from weeks of unity to minutes.

We're ###### because at this point the terrorists know us better than ourselves.

I remember precisely zero people arguing

Jun 13, 2016, 11:45 AM

abut stuff after 9/11. I remember unity, resolve and strength. I was reading arguments within minutes of this news from Orlando.

I think it's a symptom of a greater problem, that Americans have been so increasingly divided. The politicians and the media feed off of that and do everything they can to make sure it continues.

It's hard to see how the country is going to break free of it. It might take something worse than 9/11 for people to wake up to the need for community.

Perhaps a president that brings us together

Obama consistently fans the flame or at least takes part in the divisive, political b.s. He simply will not speak on behalf of the entire country, but only to the fanatical side of the left. How are we, as Americans, supposed to react to that?

I don't know a soul that doesn't condemn the shooting.

Past that it's just politics.

Politics isn't getting us anywhere

Jun 13, 2016, 12:09 PM

I owe they way I am expressing this next idea to someone somewhere and I can't find the proper attribution, but...

increasingly, all political discussion in the US is like two people hitting great tennis shots on two separate courts and calling it a match.

I agree, most political discussion are not honest.

Jun 13, 2016, 12:38 PM

They are oneupsmanship at most.

Agreed there.

Jun 13, 2016, 12:47 PM [ in reply to Politics isn't getting us anywhere ]

I'm not sure the two sides even agree on the basic terms of debate. Conservatives think it's about proceduralism and unity in national identity. Liberals think it's about egalitarianism and the liberation of various identities. On issues of identity, in particular, they aren't even speaking the same language.

Predictably, a lot of my facebook friends had lots to say about how this just proves how insane our gun laws are; about how they weren't hearing enough grief about this from conservatives; and about how non-discrimination laws were "just about use wanting to LIVE" and shouldn't be problematic to anybody at all. I'd imagine a lot of the folks here heard too much about how Obama hasn't done enough to combat Islamic terrorism, or about how he avoided mentioning it. Obama, himself, went straight to an argument for more gun laws and to shame us about our "national attitude" towards gay people.

Awful, but to be fair...

this isn't why there are gay pride parades. Pretty sure the reason for them are so that straight white girls can get drunk and wear rainbow colored tutus.

well, terrorists also use our own laws against us

Jun 13, 2016, 1:40 PM

and us the use of political correctness against us as well.
