CJ Spiller…

Feb 2, 2022, 1:14 PM

Swing and miss. Good thing we already have 3 stud RBs in the room. I can’t wait to watch Pace, Shipley, and Mafah tear it up this season.

Let's just hope they stay healthy. If not, those swings and misses could have major impacts on this team's ability to compete for a championship next year.

Adams will get carries next year.

I just hope it's not out of necessity.

Yeah, I hope we don't get in a situation where he has to go be the starter for us. I remember how bad things looked against UCONN when we only had Mafah and Rencher.

Swing and miss on CJ? Considering as a program we never get a RB that UGA wants on NSD, that's an idiotic thing to say.

Clemson doesn't care about basketball....as evidenced by Brown-L getting 14 years.

Um do you see our RB commits for 2022? It is absolutely a miss. Not just Paul but all 2022 targets. This absolutely falls on him. Same as Bates missing on all DT recruits before he left and Hall missing on DE recruits. Thank god for or new DT coach Eason. But we better hope for a massive 2023 haul or we will absolutely fall behind as National contenders.

Do you know if CJ was his main recruiter or not?

Feb 2, 2022, 1:20 PM

I could be wrong, but I don't think position coaches are fully responsible for recruiting players that will play for them. Involved? Sure. But I think it's more of a geographic territory they work.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yes, CJ Spiller was his primary recruiter…

Why all the Fuss?

Feb 2, 2022, 7:53 PM

So we miss on a 3 star RB that didn't commit until signing day? And we want to throw CJ under the bus after one recruiting season? Some folks seem to have short memories. We got our best backs on the field last year as opposed to the seniority system that we have seen in the past. The least talented backs sought the portal and the best 3 stayed. I call that a home run. I get that we didn't fill a need here. That hay was in the barn long ago - missed during the early signing period coming off a substandard season with some coaches leaving. So we signed Adams? If he can't play then we shouldn't have signed him. We also have until May 1 I believe to find a hidden gem in the portal. I have been a vocal critic of this class but I think Dabo and the staff really did a great job of salvaging the mess that they helped to create for different reasons. It's plenty good enough to win in the lowly ACC and if we can get the boat turned next year perhaps we can have a better class in 23. Need a NIL strategy and a portal strategy to inch back towards the top 5. Recruiting is Dabo's strength so I think a climb back up the ladder can still happen.

Agreed. Folks thinking losing a 4.8-40 3-star RB defines our recruiting or CJ’s recruiting talents (while we have two elite rb’s in the stable) has just baffled me. I’m way in the minority but I still think Adams will be the better of the two backs. Time will reveal.

Say what you want about Spiller--we don't win 10 games without the play of his RBs. There was no way we were ever getting Paul after Kirby targeted him. Past results coupled with a national championship (and whatever else they do) made the odds virtually impossible.

Sounds like CJ coached his way through a difficult situation early in the season with LJD and might have ended up with the best position group on the team. He will be fine recruiting. Hopefully you only see this as one swing and miss and give him 2 more strikes before you throw him out.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Did we NEED him, or did we just WANT him?

Feb 21, 2022, 12:16 PM

Because unless we really NEEDED him, then all we would have accomplished by signing him would be to set him up to become discontented.

I don’t think Georgia NEEDED him either.

So I guess we didn’t pitch our WANT as strongly as they did ... maybe because we’re weren’t all that desperate to add RB who would be looking for carries as a freshman.

Don’t get me wrong ... as a fan, I WANTED him as much as anyone and I hare losing a recruiting battle to the dawgs.

But in reality, it was a small skirmish and not a major fight.

2023 is when we will have a NEED and we will WANT to fight for a top RB.

Re: Did we NEED him, or did we just WANT him?

Feb 21, 2022, 1:08 PM

Pretty sure we needed him man. We have 3 scholarship tailbacks on roster and the fourth guy coming in won’t be here till July and was unrated until 2 weeks ago.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Okay ... but what would his role have been?

Feb 21, 2022, 7:40 PM

Who does he take snaps away from in 2022 or 2023?

If all we needed him for was insurance against injury, then that’s probably a recipe for pushing him to the portal sooner than later.

I think next year is when we really NEED to sign a quality RB or two.
