Let's pretend The Tigers weren't the defending Natty Champs,

hadn't been to the playoffs multi-times, and came into the year ranked - let's say #23.
Would The Tigers have a chance in heck of making the playoff this year - even if we went undefeated? Conceivably, only 1 Top 25 win (maybe 0, if A&M turns out to be overrated)...

The only chance an undefeated (13-0), Power 5 team is getting left out of the playoff is if there are 4 other Power 5/Notre Dame teams.
So there is no chance that an undefeated Power 5 team will ever be left out of a 4 team playoff.
A terrible Iowa team was going to be in a few years ago until they got beat in the Big 10 title game.

Let's say if 5 power 5 teams were undefeated and I am including ND, one undeafted team would have to be left out. That is if it is possible for 5 power 5 teams to be undefeated.

...which is the reason competing for a National Championship is not a goal for Clemson. It is...but it isn't. I know - confusing. But Clemson can't control what 13 people decide. So make the official goals about what you can control. The outcome of games.

ESPN would make the case for having 3 SEC teams in.***

I get that it is mathematically possible, but if you look at the history of college football it's really not.
I don't think there has ever been 5 undefeated power 5 teams heading into bowl games.
That's pretty low odds that it will happen in the near future.

Win all of your games as a power 5 team and you're in.

It's why the 4 team playoff works.

conceivable that Notre Dame could go undefeated and miss the playoffs. (That would probably not be the case this year, as with an undefeated record, they would have beaten the #2 team in the mighty SEC, as well as the probable #2 team in the ACC in Virginia, as well as a decent Pac 12 team in USC, etc.)

came out of nowhere to go undefeated and win the ACC - we would very possibly be left out (because of our apparently weak schedule this year). Any 1-loss SEC team would get in ahead of us.

Undefeated, 13-0 Power 5 conference champs AND an undefeated, 12-0 Notre Dame will be the day the Irish will have to fold their tent and join. If the CFP EVER tries to justify putting ND in over a team that has to RISK its' own 12-0 season simply for inclusion is the day the process crumbles in an 10.0 temblor.

Was thinking this myself. It's not inconceivable given the lack of support the rest of our conference is giving us in the polls this year that we would be left out in favor of a 1-loss P5 conference champion. Thankfully, we have earned the college football world's respect and this is not an issue
